Subsidized Rental Opportunities

Subsidized rental opportunities are available throughout Suffolk County, though in general demand far exceeds supply. Click here for a list of properties compiled by the Suffolk County Planning Department.

Section 8 housing assistance provides rental subsidies to eligible applicants. You can apply for Section 8 rental assistance only when a Section 8 list is "open" and accepting new applicants. The following organizations maintain Section 8 lists. We will attempt to provide information on which lists are open at any particular point but urge you to check with each agency directly:

The Community Development Corporation operates several programs that provide assistance to renters:

  • Housing Choice Voucher Programs - CDC manages the distribution of over $34 million in annual rent subsidies for Suffolk County residents. CDC assists eligible families to rent decent, safe, and sanitary housing from the private rental housing market. Currently the waiting list for this program is closed.

  • Mainstream Housing Opportunities for Persons With Disabilities - The Mainstream Program makes Housing Choice Vouchers available to eligible disabled individuals/families regardless of their type of disability. The waiting list for this program is currently closed.

  • Family Self Sufficiency Program (FSS) - The Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) Program assists individuals and families who are receiving Housing Choice Voucher rental assistance to secure the resources they need to achieve economic self-sufficiency. Case managers meet regularly with participants, helping them to establish goals. Families are provided with resources including: scholarships to colleges and training programs, budgeting, job training, childcare, health services, and counseling.

  • Family Unification Program (FUP) - Families who need affordable safe housing and are in danger of losing their children to foster care or families seeking to be reunited with their children are referred by the Suffolk County Department of Social Services to CDC of Long Island for a Housing Choice Voucher that has been specifically set aside to solve this pressing housing need.
