Welcome to the online services of the Suffolk County Executive's Office of Consumer Affairs. Should you wish to e-mail us, please include your full name, mailing address and daytime telephone number. Thank You.
The Bureau of Weights & Measures is responsible for inspecting and testing all weighing and measuring devices used for commercial purposes in the county. Weighing devices include: scales used in supermarkets, delicatessens, butcher shops, fish stores, laundromats, etc. Measuring devices include: gasoline pumps, fuel oil meters, LPG meters, and fabric-measuring devices. The bureau licenses and inspects all precious metals dealers in the county and registers all gasoline stations and distributors.
The bureau also checks all types of packaged commodities for net weight compliance. Water contamination tests are performed on all gasolines. Quality testing of gasoline is conducted both routinely and as follow-up to complaints. Consumer complaints concerning inaccurate weighing and measuring devices, shortweight or shortmeasure purchases, contaminated gasoline, or inquiries about the sale of fuel oil, coal, firewood or any other commodity sold by weight or measure should be referred to this division.
- Didn't get the amount of gas you paid for?
- Were you charged a different amount at the register from the amount on the pricing label?
- Suspect a scale in a store is 'heavy' causing you to be charged for more than you actually recieved?
If you have a complaint, inquiry, or any question at all about any of the above topics, you may call 631-853-5730 Monday through Friday, from 9am to 4 pm for assistance.
