NYS Speech-Language-Hearing Association

NYSSLHA founded in 1960, is a non-profit organization of professionals dedicated to serving the needs of the communicatively handicapped. These professionals identify, evaluate and treat people with communication disorders.

NYSSLHA's membership is composed of speech-language pathologists, audiologists, teachers of the speech and hearing handicapped and others interested in speech, language and hearing disorders; A SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGIST is a professional trained in the study of human communication, its normal development, its disorders and its treatment. A speech-language pathologist is licensed and certified by the State Education Department in New York.

An AUDIOLOGIST is a professional concerned with normal and impaired hearing, and with the identification, evaluation and rehabilitation of those who have hearing problems. An audiologist is licensed by the State Education Department in New York.

WHY?

One out of every ten people has a speech, language or hearing problem. Communicative disorders can affect anyone at any age, from the newborn to the elderly.

Adequate hearing is essential for normal speech/language development. Therefore early identification of potential hearing problems is paramount in children. There are often social and emotional effects of undetected communicative disorders making identification and remediation in adults equally important.

EARLY and PROPER identification of communicative disorders is necessary for appropriate treatment and rehabilitation, and possible prevention. Most people with communicative handicaps can be helped. Rehabilitation for these impairments includes: medical and surgical treatments, amplification, and speech and language therapy.

REMEMBER: 20 million Americans are affected by a communication disorder.

COMMUNICATIVE DISORDERS may include:

SPEECH DISORDERS

Articulation or sound production, stuttering or disorders of rate and rhythm; voice - inappropriate pitch or quality.

Language Disorders

Delayed language acquisition; learning disabilities; aphasia.

HEARING DISORDERS

Conductive hearing loss; sensorineural hearing loss; mixed hearing loss; auditory perceptual difficulties.

WHERE?

NYSSLHA members can be found providing clinical services in hospitals, community clinics, public and private schools, universities, colleges, health departments, industries, state and federal agencies, research laboratories, as well as private practices.

NYSSLHA can provide you with a referral guide so you may obtain clinical services in your area, and additional information regarding communicative disorders.

NYSSLHA's goal is to increase your awareness of the nature and scope of communicative handicaps, and how you may obtain help.
