2007 Women's Hall of Fame Inductees

Out of the impressive nominations received by the Office of Women’s Services,

Maria Acevedo, Director and Founder of Voces Latina
  • Organized, trained and supported over 200 Childcare providers in the Latino community
  • Helped thousands of children get professional, quality, safe, clean childcare services
  • Freed up a generation of women who could enter the workplace with adequate childcare
  • Often provides free childcare services to women who cannot afford payments
  • Has extended her services free of charge to the African American community of childcare providers
Denna Cohen, President of MADD
  • Works with Law enforcement
  • Assists DWI victims through grief counseling and court advocacy
  • On call 24x7 to assist Police with death notification
  • Visits dozens of schools and colleges sharing her story with thousands of students, parents and educators
Alison Hegeman, Philanthropist
  • 91 years old
  • Received her Bachelors degree from Stony Brook University at the age 82
  • Remarried at age 84 robbed the cradle (husband is 72)
  • Saw a need at Maureen's Haven Homeless shelter and came up with a creative way to raise money; wrote and self published her autobiography, "The Best Is Yet to Come", and will give anyone a copy of the book free if they promise to send $10 to Maureen's Haven Homeless Shelter
  • Sits on the Board of Directors of the Community Action of Southold Town, and received more votes than anyone in the history of the organization
  • Has, recently, completed her second book, "From There to Here", with the same marketing plan, $10 donation in exchange for a free copy
  • Works with children in Mexican orphanages whom she refers to as her godchildren
Karen Acompora, Founder of the Louis J. Acompora Foundation
  • Tragically lost her son Louis playing Lacrosse. Louis lost his life when hit by the blunt impact by the ball in his chest
  • She started a grass roots campaign to have defibrillators in schools andLouis J. Acompora foundation
  • Dedicated her time and effort to the implementation Automated External Defibrillators (AED’s), in schools, athletic fields and at other public arenas)
  • Campaigned to change the law to required AED’s and training for Coaches in public schools, which Pataki signed into law in 2002
  • Raises money to provide free AED to schools and Not for profit organizations, and has donated more that 7,000, AED’s in schools, training kits to schools across the country and abroad
  • To date there have been 26 documented survivors as a result of the AED’s
  • Recently in conjunction with Heart Screen America and co sponsored by Oxford and United Health Care offered low cost heart screening to all Northport- East Northport students ages 6-18 to determine risk factors or underlying heart problems

were chosen to be inducted into the Suffolk County Women Hall of Fame. These most deserving honorees who fulfilled our criteria, have overcome personal barriers and continue to be a model of courage. On top of their everyday lives, raising a family and careers they all volunteered their extra time to help those in need and gave back to their community. The passion and leadership of these four women inspired and impacted the lives of the residents in Suffolk County in one way or another.
