The Suffolk County Women's Advisory Commission, created through a resolution by the Suffolk County Legislature, underwent a re-organization through new legislation in 2000. Our purpose, as outlined in our mission statement, is to help eliminate discrimination against women, insure equal opportunity for women, and to promote the equal status of women in our society. Twenty-six women, selected by various branches of Suffolk County government, have agreed to volunteer their time to be the advisory board to the Office of Women's Services by acting as the eyes and ears of the office. Although the task at hand is large, our group is committed to obtaining and maintaining a strong knowledge of the concerns and needs of Suffolk County's female population. To this end, several committees have been formed, and more will be added as our scope expands:
-
Legal Issues
-
Housing and the Homeless
-
Health Issues
We have accomplished much since our first meeting in January of 2001, and we look forward to doing much more. We welcome the women of Suffolk County to join us by working on any one of our committees. Please call 853-8284 if you would like to be involved!
MISSION STATEMENT
To explore and identify the needs of the women of Suffolk County; to advise the Suffolk County Office of Women's Services, The County Executive, and the Legislature of those findings; to advocate for appropriate changes in policy and practices to meet those needs; to coordinate and develop resources in both the public and private sectors; to stimulate community awareness and interest in women's issues and in the resources available; and to insure recognition of a response to the needs and accomplishments of Suffolk women.
