Thirty Acres Preserved... Suffolk County and Brookhaven Town have teamed up to acquire the development rights nearly 30 acres of farmland near Terrell River  Suffolk County and Brookhaven Town partnered to fund the full cost of acquiring the development rights of the Cuomo Family Farm in East Moriches, at just over $5 million.  Suffolk County funded 70 percent of the preservation cost of the farm – roughly $3.5 million – through its Quarter-Cent Drinking Water Protection Program, while Brookhaven Town paid the remaining 30 percent ($1.5 million).

By purchasing the farm’s development rights, Suffolk County is preventing any potential developers from ever buying the land for anything other than farming; while the current owners of the property still own and farm the land.  The purchase has been a high priority acquisition by Brookhaven Town for many years and ranked in the top five of parcels targeted by the Town for open space preservation.
