Tobacco Free FAQs

Can you help me quit smoking?
Yes. The Suffolk County Department of Health Services offers free smoking cessation programs to residents. You will learn important information about what happens to your body when you quit, and what to expect in the first days and weeks. You will be given helpful tips about how to ease any discomfort and become tobacco free.

How long are the classes?
Classes are held one time per week and are about an hour long. The entire program runs 6 weeks, with a reunion class held a month after the last class.

Where do I have to go for these classes?
Classes are held at convenient locations throughout Suffolk County. If you are looking to join a group, we will give you the location nearest you or your workplace. Pre-registration is required for all classes.

What about the medications and other products that are supposed to help people quit?
The Department offers prescription medication as well as nicotine replacement products such as patches and gum to medically eligible participants in the smoking cessation classes. These products will be made available only under the direction and supervision of a certified nurse practitioner. In order to receive any medication, a participant must first attend at least three class sessions.

Where do I sign up?
Look on the Health Services homepage for the current month's Smoking Cessation classes or call the "Learn To Be... Tobacco Free" office at (631) 853-4017 for more information and instructions on how to register for a class.
