Additional Mosquito Samples Test Positive for West Nile Virus
Hauppauge, NY – Suffolk County Department of Health Services (SCDHS) Commissioner, Dr. Humayun Chaudhry, announced that the New York State Department of Health confirmed that two mosquito samples collected on August 11th in North Babylon and West Islip tested positive for West Nile virus. A total of three mosquito samples collected in Suffolk County this season have tested positive for the virus.

Suffolk County Rabies Baiting Program – July 2009
Huntington, NY - In an effort to contain the spread of terrestrial rabies on Long Island and potentially eliminate the virus from local wildlife, the Suffolk County Department of Health Services, in cooperation with the New York State Department of Health, Cornell University and the United States Department of Agriculture’s Wildlife Services, will be distributing baits containing an oral rabies vaccine (ORV) in the Town of Huntington. The one-inch-square fish-meal baits and coated sachet baits will be distributed from both Suffolk County automobiles and a Police Department helicopter.

Vector Control Pesticide Management Committee Meeting Scheduled
The Vector Control Pesticide Management Committee was established by County Executive Steve Levy (Executive Order 15-2007) in December of 2007. It is composed of various county and non-county members who are charged with reviewing emerging literature on potential impacts of vector control pesticides and evaluating pesticide reduction alternatives in regard to vector control activities.

New York, NY – The Division of Patient Care Services HIV Program received the New York State Department of Health AIDS Institute prestigious Award for Consumer Involvement in Quality Improvement. Suffolk County Medical Forensic Investigator Assists in Continental Flight #3407 Review

Golden, who assisted emergency personnel following the February 12th crash of Continental Flight #3407. Golden worked with a team of experts to identify victims after the plane crashed into a home in Clarence, NY, killing all 49 people on board and a man on the ground.

New Cases of West Nile Virus Confirmed for 2008 in Suffolk County
Hauppauge, NY – Suffolk County Commissioner of Health Services Dr. Humayun Chaudhry, D.O., M.S., announced that two new cases of West Nile virus in Suffolk County from 2008 have been confirmed by the New York State Department of Health Wadsworth Laboratory. One additional case was reported as probable for West Nile, bringing the total number of cases to nine for the year 2008. There have been no deaths in Suffolk County in 2008 due to the virus.

Suffolk County Health Center Among First to Issue New Healthful Nutrition Packages to Pregnant Women and Children
Suffolk County Department of Health Services Commissioner Dr. Humayun Chaudhry today announced that the South Brookhaven Family Health Center in Patchogue will be the among the first in the nation to issue “new and improved” food packages to low-income pregnant, breastfeeding or postpartum women, and to infants and children up to 5 years of age who are at nutritional risk. Residents who meet the criteria may receive food, nutrition counseling and health services through the federally funded Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC).
