Sheriff Vincent DeMarco Bolsters Young Driver’s Safety
Today Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco unveiled a new program called S.T.O.P.P.E.D. aimed at reducing the number of young drivers involved in motor vehicle crashes. The acronym stands for Sheriffs Telling Our Parents & Promoting Educated Drivers.
Armed Woman Arrested for Trespassing at Suffolk County Gabreski Airport/Air National Guard Base
A Quogue woman was arrested Thursday night after Air National Guard Officials called the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office to report a woman taking pictures of both the air base and surrounding airport property. Upon arriving at the scene, Deputy Sheriffs discovered an XM-15 assault rifle and a shot gun along with a cache of ammunition in the woman’s vehicle
Quick Driver’s Seat Switch Leads to DWI Arrests for Two Brothers
At approximately 5:38 pm, Deputy Sheriff Jaime Bustamante witnessed a 1999 blue Dodge vehicle being driven by defendant Milton Culquipuma drive over the white hazard lines of the HOV buffer as he changed lanes from the left lane into the HOV lane.
Sayville’s Pilot Club, in partnership with Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent DeMarco, helps Day Haven.
Through extensive fundraising efforts, the Pilot Club of Sayville has donated a dozen transmitter bracelets and supplies to Day Haven Adult Day Services. These valuable donations have greatly assisted caregivers and helped families and individuals afflicted with impairments such as Alzheimer’s, Autism or brain disorders which may cause them to wander and become lost. 2009 Criminal Justice Scholarship Winners
On Thursday June 11th, Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent DeMarco joined with the New York State Sheriffs’ Association Institute in honoring two local students who show promise as future criminal justice leaders. The students, David O’Brien and Jeffrey Campbell, were selected from Suffolk County Community College to receive the New York State Sheriffs’ Association Institute’s 2009 Criminal Justice Scholarship for their academic excellence and their dedicated pursuit of a career in the field of criminal justice. The students were each awarded a scholarship check in the amount of $500.
Operation S.H.I.E.L.D.
Members of the East End Marine Task Force, including the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, the towns of Southampton, Sag Harbor, East Hampton, Southold, Riverhead and Shelter Island, NYS DEC, and NYS Police working in conjunction with the Department of Homeland Security, New York State Information Center, United States Coast Guard and Customs and Border Patrol, conducted Operation S.H.I.E.L.D. (Suffolk Homeland Security Interdiction, Education Long Island Defense), over the July 4th weekend.
Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent DeMarco Promotes “Sharing the Road” with Motorcycles by Joining with American Bikers Aimed Toward Education (ABATE)
On Monday, June 15th Sheriff Vincent DeMarco and deputies joined with the group ABATE, American Bikers Aimed Toward Education, to kick off their awareness campaign and to proclaim June 2009 as “Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Month” in New York State. ABATE is a not-for-profit, volunteer organization committed to preserving the rights and safety of motorcyclists.
Programs Available for Suffolk County Schools for the 2009-2010 School year
Due to the successful implementation of several programs this school year, Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco wanted to make local schools aware of the various community outreach programs his office offers.
Heroin D.W.I. on Expressway Flatbed Truck Driver Arrested
This morning, Monday, June 8th, at approximately 8:30 a.m., Gabriel Rodriguez, d.o.b. 10/19/78, of New York City, was arrested on the Long Island Expressway after operating a stolen flatbed truck while on Heroin.
Overexposed on the Expressway
A Yaphank man was arrested by Sheriff’s Deputies last night near Exit 57 on the Long Island Expressway following a 911 report of a naked man on the highway. Multiple sightings of the subject have been reported over the last nine days along the L.I. Expressway between Exits 57 and 68. Initial investigation showed a developing pattern in the sightings,and Deputies were on alert when the latest call came in at 7:45 p.m. on Thursday. The subject was spotted coming out of the woods and attempted to flee in a 2004 Jeep westbound on eastbound service road. The subject was stopped and arrested at the scene.
Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco Completes 96th Session of National Sheriffs’ Institute
Longmont, Colorado—Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office completed participation in the 96th session of the National Sheriffs’ Institute (NSI) held in Longmont, Colorado, May 17-23, 2009. All expenses were paid for by the U.S. Department of Justice. The NSI is the only national executive development program designed for sheriffs. It is co-sponsored by the National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA) and the National Institute of Corrections (NIC).
Fake Cop Foiled By Deputy Sheriff
At 6:05 a.m. today Deputy Sheriff Michael Brecht of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office observed what appeared to be a police officer in an unmarked Crown Victoria and a woman in a minivan stopped on the Long Island Expressway. Further investigation revealed that the “Officer” was not a police officer at all, resulting in the arrest of the subject, Juan Santiago, d.o.b. 5/29/69, of Middle Island.

Sheriff Management Nets over $334,000 Savings
Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco reports that 2009 year-to-date overtime totals for the entire Sheriff’s Office, inclusive of Correction Officers, Deputy Sheriffs, and civilians, are down $334,600 from the same period last year, a 7.7% reduction. The savings were achieved through efficient management of personnel.
Sheriff’s Office Arrests Net Heroin, Cocaine and Six Felony Charges
Following up on intelligence gathered during an investigation into a hit and run occurring on the Long Island Expressway, Deputy Sheriff Investigators from the Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Bureau conducted a narcotics investigation at 329 Hancock Street in Brentwood, resulting in two arrests for multiple drug charges including six felonies.
“End” Zone for Superbowl D.W.I.’s
The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office reminds Superbowl partygoers to be responsible and not drink and drive. The Sheriff’s Office will be supplementing patrols on the Sunrise Highway and Long Island Expressway on Superbowl Sunday in an effort to deter motorists from getting behind the wheel after drinking during the Superbowl.
County Officials Refute Newsday’s Story on Sheriff Overtime
Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent DeMarco and County Executive Steve Levy cited as inaccurate a Newsday story claiming that Sheriff overtime has uncharacteristically spiked in the fourth quarter of 2008 due to the increased usage of Suffolk County Sheriffs to patrol the Long Island Expressway and Sunrise Highway.
Wrong Way D.W.I. In H.O.V.
Sheriff’s Deputies arrested Manuel Santos, d.o.b. 11/21/76, of Brentwood, New York, last night at 7:30 p.m., following multiple calls reporting a driver traveling eastbound in the westbound H.O.V. lane of the Long Island Expressway. He has been charged with D.W.I. and is due to be arraigned in First District Court in Central Islip today.
“No Violence is G.R.E.A.T.” Sheriff’s Program
200 Patchogue Students Complete “G.R.E.A.T.” Program
On Wednesday, January 14, 2009 at 9:00 a.m., the South Ocean Avenue Middle School in Patchogue will hold its first G.R.E.A.T. (Gang Resistance Education and Training) Graduation. This is the culmination of a 13-lesson program administered by the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office aimed at preventing youth crime, violence and gang involvement while developing a positive relationship among law enforcement families and young people.
