Housing Heroes: Suffolk Executive Steve Levy (center) was joined by Department of Social Services (DSS) Assistant Commissioner Greg Blass (left) and Legislator Kate Browning (right) in Hauppauge today to outline new legislation combating illegal, overcrowded housing. Town supervisors and village mayors will be able to submit to DSS a list of 10 housing units at a time that are in violation of regulations. If any of those dwellings are home to public assistance recipients, the property owners will be given 20 days to remediate those violations. If all violations are not remedied within 20 days, DSS will work with any willing public assistance recipients at those residences to identify alternative housing.
