Labor Mediation

LABOR MEDIATION

Work slowdowns, strikes, job actions, and grievances take a tremendous bite out of business productivity.

It is the responsibility of the Department of Labor to monitor all labor disputes within Suffolk County.

When problems arise between Labor and Management, the Labor Department, as a neutral party, acts to maintain open lines of communication in an effort to resolve the dispute. The Commissioner of Labor and the Department are named in many collective bargaining agreements in the private and public sector as the designee to arbitrate and/or administer the necessary assistance to encourage settlements of grievances. The Labor Mediator monitors labor disputes throughout Suffolk County as a mediator/conciliator to offer whatever assistance is necessary to aid the parties in resolving contract negotiations.

The Department's Labor Mediator serves as hearing officer on disciplinary matters covered by Civil Service law and presides as administrative law judge for County consumer law violations.

The Labor Mediator receives, investigates, and adjudicates all complaints concerning the Department's employment and training programs. Staff answer thousands of employment/human resources/labor law related questions annually and are available for consultation on labor issues.
