In Suffolk County, administration of the Civil Service Law is carried out under the direction of the Suffolk County Personnel Director. The Suffolk County Department of Civil Service is responsible for overseeing personnel actions taken by some 241 employing jurisdictions including school districts, towns, villages water districts, library districts, etc. Collectively, these jurisdictions employ some 40,000 individuals.

The majority of all jobs fall within the competitive class, which is characterized by examinations used to ascertain the relative merit and fitness of candidates. Announcements for current examinations are available on this site by clicking on Current List of Exams. Examination announcements are also posted in the Hauppauge Office of the Suffolk County Department of Civil Service and at our Riverhead Office located in the Riverhead County Center.

This site contains a section for Frequently Asked Questions. In addition, the Department's Information Unit in Hauppauge is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 5 PM for further information. Effective September 1, 2010 the Riverhead Office will be open every Wednesday from 9 AM to 4:30 PM, year around.

PART TIME / TEMPORARY POSITIONS
UP TO 17.5 HOURS PER WEEK

Suffolk County has entered into a Local Project Partnership Agreement with the State of New York in connection with the reconstruction of portions of the Fire Island Barrier Beach and Dune Network from the Fire Island Inlet to Moriches Inlet (FIMI). Suffolk County will be working with New York State and the United States Army Corps of Engineers to repair damage along the shoreline created by Superstorm Sandy and to stabilize the area to prevent future damage.

The Suffolk County Department of Economic Development and Planning is seeking to hire highly motivated and enthusiastic people to fill the below positions as soon as possible, to assist with the implementation of the real estate aspect of this project.

Land Management Specialist I - Salary: $17.50 per hour
Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and two (2) years of experience in the appraisal, purchase, sale, acquisition, title search or management of real property.

NOTES: Additional education may be substituted for experience on a year-for- year basis.
Possession of a New York State Real Estate Broker's license will substitute for one (1) year of the above experience.

Land Management Specialist II - Salary: $20.07 per hour
Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and three (3) years of experience in the appraisal, purchase, sale, acquisition, title search or management of real property.

NOTES: Additional education may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of two (2) years.
Possession of a New York State Real Estate Broker's License will substitute for one (1) year of the above experience.

Land Management Specialist III - Salary: $22.97 per hour
Minimum Qualifications:
Either:
(a) Graduation from a New York State or regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree, and two (2) years of experience in the appraisal, purchase, sale, acquisition, title search or management of real property; or,
(b) Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma , and six (6) years of experience in the appraisal, purchase, sale, acquisition, title search or management of real property; or,
(c) An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (a) and (b).

NOTE: Possession of a New York State Real Estate Broker's license will substitute for one (1) year of the above experience.

Land Management Specialist IV - Salary: $26.19 per hour
Minimum Qualifications:
Either:
(a) Graduation from a New York State or regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree, and four (4) years of experience in the appraisal, purchase, sale, acquisition, title search, or management of real property; or,
(b) Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and eight (8) years of experience in the appraisal, purchase, sale, acquisition, title search or management of real property; or,
(c) An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (a) and (b).

NOTE: Possession of a New York State Real Estate Broker's license will substitute for one (1) year of the above experience.

Appraisal Reviewer - Salary: $30.84 per hour
Minimum Qualifications:
Either:
(a) Graduation from a New York State or regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree, and five (5) years of experience in real property appraisal, two (2) years of which must have been in a management capacity; or,
(b) Completion of sixty (60) credit hours from a New York State or regionally accredited college or university, and seven (7) years of experience in real property appraisal, two (2) years of which must have been in a management capacity.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
At the time of appointment and throughout employment, the employee must possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State or otherwise demonstrate their capacity to meet the transportation requirements of the position.

Because these are temporary, part-time positions, benefits are not included

Director of Management and Research

Suffolk County's Director of Management and Research will lead the performance management team in the county-wide quality improvement process.

Responsibilities:
Acting as liaison for the performance management team to engage department heads and their staff in the implementation and maintenance of the County’s performance measurement and management system through coordinating, coaching and training, overseeing data collection, analysis, performance analysis and delivery of recommendations to executive staff .

Minimum Requirements:
(a) Graduation from a New York State or regionally accredited college or university with a Master's Degree in Public Administration or Business Administration and seven (7) years of administrative experience, at least four (4) of which have involved review of governmental operations; or,
(b) Graduation from a New York State or regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree and nine (9) years of administrative experience, at least four (4) of which have involved review of governmental operations.

Salary:

Assistant Director of Management and Research

Commissioner of Information Technology

Suffolk County's Department of Information Technology is seeking a Commissioner who will oversee a department with a staff of 100 and a budget of over $18 million.

The Department is responsible for managing and coordinating the County’s use of existing and emerging technologies in governmental operations which includes divisions of Information Technology Services, Telecommunications, Geographic Information Systems, Internet Support, Applications Development and Network Services. Emphasis is on building a technology foundation to support government innovations and efficiency.

Minimum Requirements:
A Bachelor’s Degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, Computer Science or Information Technology plus ten (10) years of administrative experience planning, directing and coordinating all aspects of large scale information technology operations including organizational finance and/or budgeting processes, mainframe operations, office systems, networking, telecommunications, application development, web based systems, and disaster recovery. Public sector experience is preferred.

Industrial Engineer

Suffolk County Government is seeking an Industrial Engineer to serve as a member of the County Executive’s Performance Management Team. . The incumbent in this position will work in a multi-disciplinary environment, with a County-wide scope and an emphasis on improving operations, productivity, procedures and/or systems. Knowledge of Performance Appraisal, benchmarking and data-driven decision making is particularly valuable. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, Project and Visio, Microsoft Excel PowerPivot, Microsoft BISM and Business Process Modeling Software preferred.

Minimum Requirements:

Deputy Medical Examiner

Suffolk County is seeking a Deputy Medical Examiner (Pathologist). The Deputy Medical Examiner performs post mortem examinations in cases coming under the jurisdiction of the Medical Examiner's Office.

Responsibilities include visiting the scenes of deaths and making the initial examination of undisturbed bodies, investigating circumstances surrounding deaths and submitting all findings to the Medical Examiner's Office.

Minimum Requirements:
Applicants must possess a license to practice medicine in the State of New York and qualified for examination by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic Pathology and Forensic Pathology.

Chief Planner

Suffolk County is seeking a Chief Planner (Criminal Justice) for the Probation Department to work with the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council. The work involves the professional analysis and compilation of data on criminal justice services throughout Suffolk County and the implementation of agency policy.

Responsibilities include supervising and coordinating the work of a professional and technical staff. Supervision is received from an administrative supervisor through conferences and written reports.

Minimum Requirements:
Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree, and eight (8) years of experience in social planning or development, three (3) years of which must have been in criminal justice services. Additional graduate education will be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis to a maximum of five (5) years. Education cannot be used to replace the criminal justice services experience.

Deputy Chief Medical Examiner

Suffolk County is seeking a Deputy Chief Medical Examiner to act in the absence of the Chief Medical Examiner and perform medical-legal work assisting in the administration of the County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Responsibilities include reviewing and coordinating the work of medical, laboratory and investigatory personnel; performing post-mortem examinations; evaluating laboratory reports; providing court testimony, and performing related duties, as required.

Minimum Requirements:
Applicants must possess a license to practice medicine in the State of New York, and two (2) years of full-time experience in a Medical Examiner’s or Coroner’s Office. In addition, all applicants must be certified by the American Board of Pathology or possess equivalent certification in Anatomic Pathology and Forensic Pathology.

Special Investigator

The position of Special Investigator in the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office may arise in the near future. This position is in the exempt class and the appointee serves at the pleasure of the District Attorney.

Minimum Requirements:
Ten (10) years of experience as a detective employed by a Police Department or Investigator employed by a District Attorney’s Office located in the State of New York, with specific prior experience as a Systems Administrator for the SyTech ADACS Platform, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) Electronic Surveillance Platform approved for use in eavesdropping warrants. Prior experience in covert neutralization of locks, locking systems, and surveillance security systems on public and private premises is also required for this position. Applicants must provide specific detail as to their training and experience in the above areas to be considered for this position.

Instrumentation Technician

The Suffolk County Department of Public Works seeks a responsible, motivated and self-starting individual to fill an Instrumentation Technician position in our Sanitation Division in Stony Brook. This division oversees the operation and maintenance of twenty-one wastewater treatment plants and seventy pump stations throughout Suffolk County.

Incumbents will perform functions in areas listed below as well as other areas as required.  

(1) Pneumatic and mechanical instrumentation and motor control systems.
(2) Basic electronics.
(3) Electrical instrumentation maintenance.
(4) Fundamentals of digital logic.
(5) Digital systems maintenance.
(6) Variable (proportioning) controllers.

Minimum Requirements:
Graduation from a New York State or regionally accredited college or university with an Associate's Degree in Electrical Technology or a related field, and two (2) years of experience in the installation, repair, maintenance or trouble-shooting of electronic, electro-mechanical or electrical monitoring equipment. Additional experience in the above-mentioned fields will be substituted for the above required education on a year-for-year basis.

Starting Salary:
$45,988 plus excellent benefit package. Suffolk County residency required.
