In Suffolk County, administration of the Civil Service Law is carried out under the direction of the Suffolk County Personnel Director. The Suffolk County Department of Civil Service is responsible for overseeing personnel actions taken by some 241 employing jurisdictions including school districts, towns, villages water districts, library districts, etc. Collectively, these jurisdictions employ some 40,000 individuals.

The majority of all jobs fall within the competitive class, which is characterized by examinations used to ascertain the relative merit and fitness of candidates. Announcements for current examinations are available on this site by clicking on Current List of Exams. Examination announcements are also posted in the Hauppauge Office of the Suffolk County Department of Civil Service and at our Riverhead Office located in the Riverhead County Center.

This site contains a section for Frequently Asked Questions. In addition, the Department's Information Unit in Hauppauge is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 5 PM for further information. Effective September 1, 2010 the Riverhead Office will be open every Wednesday from 9 AM to 4:30 PM, year around.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
a) Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice or a related field, and one (1) year of investigative experience; o
b) Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and five (5) years of investigative experience; or,                                                       
c) An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of a) and b).  
NOTE: Investigative experience is defined as experience involving the investigation and development of charges leading toward civil proceedings or criminal prosecution

Duties include performing investigative work regarding the County Conflicts of Interest Laws, reporting to the Board of Directors, collecting records, interviewing witnesses, testifying at hearings, and creating. Former investigation experience required.
This position is an approved full-time position currently funded part-time for 2017.

The Southampton School District is seeking a School Transportation Supervisor.

An employee in this position plans, assigns and directs the work of a substantial number of employees engaged in the operation and maintenance of school transportation equipment. The work involves establishing bus routes and time schedules for each school, as well as supervising the maintenance, repair and inspection of all vehicles in the district. The employee is responsible for reviewing the operation of the transportation unit and for acting as an advisor on school transportation matters.

Qualified candidates must possess either:
a)  Graduation from a New York State or regionally accredited college or university with an Associate’s Degree, and two (2) years of management experience in the operation, scheduling and maintenance of a bus transportation system; or,

b)  Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and four (4) years of management experience in the operation, scheduling and maintenance of a bus transportation system.
 
NOTE:  Additional experience will be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.

Suffolk County, New York – (February 17, 2017) – Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and the Suffolk County Department of  Parks, Recreation and Conservation are pleased to announce  that the Suffolk County Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation is now accepting  applications for a variety of seasonal employment positions at beaches, parks, golf courses, and campgrounds for the 2017 season. 

"Seasonal employment with the parks department provides the opportunity for individuals to help protect the environment, while earning money and providing a real service to the public,” said Bellone.  “With over 48,000 acres of parkland, the Parks Department requires extra assistance in efficiently maintaining each facility as well as help in providing a safe environment for the public.”

            Park Attendants are hired to perform a variety of tasks including maintenance, office work, as well as registrations and fee collections at the entrance booths. Park Attendants must be at least 16 years of age, and willing to work weekends and holidays, early and evening shifts. Environmental Analyst 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with a Bachelor's Degree in mathematics, one of the natural or physical sciences, environmental studies or a related field, plus two (2) years of experience in environmental protection activities.  NOTE:  Graduate education in one of the above areas will be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis

An Environmental Analyst performs scientific research and analyses on matters affecting the quality of the environment in a town or other municipality, and participates in developing a program of environĀ­mental protection for that municipality.  The incumbent acts as a consultant to departments whose operations or decisions may have an impact on the environment.

Substitute School Crossing Guard

The Suffolk County Police Department is seeking candidates for the position of substitute School Crossing Guard. Substitute School Crossing Guards work on an on-call basis. The hourly rate of pay as of 07/01/16 is $13.27. There is a guarantee of 3.0 hours for every assignment. No other benefits are available. Typical work activities include regulating the directional flow of school children, pedestrian and vehicular traffic at an assigned intersection or school crosswalk; reporting traffic incidents to police authorities for appropriate action ; noting unusual or suspicious occurrences or actions of individuals and alerting police in cases of observed or suspected violations of law and ordinances. Candidates must be able to read and write English. At the time of appointment, and during employment, employees must possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State. Prior to appointment, there will be qualifying psychological and medical evaluations as well as an in-depth background investigation. The Suffolk County Police Department is seeking full time Detention Attendants

Detention Attendants duties include: searching prisoners for weapons, contraband, drugs and other harmful articles; guarding persons detained at a police station house or detention facility pending hearing or transfer to a penal institution. Caring for prisoners who are sick or Intoxicated; accompanying prisoners to court; observing inmates in cells to assure prisoners' well being and adherence to regulations and rules.

Responsible for the cleanliness and sanitation of the dormitory and cells of detention facilities and clerical tasks such as maintaining detention log, sorting documents, data entry, filing, opening and distributing station mail and answering phones and relaying messages.

All candidates must undergo qualifying psychological & medical evaluations as well as an extensive background investigation before being hired. Detention Attendants must obtain a CDL license at their own expense after they are hired.

The annual salary is $31,050.00. Employees are required to join the New York State Retirement System. The current applicable contribution rate is 3% of the gross salary. Employees may also enroll in health insurance coverage. The annual cost for an individual plan is $1,418.53 while the annual cost for a family plan is $3,025.51.

Special Investigator

The position of Special Investigator in the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office may arise in the near future. This position is in the exempt class and the appointee serves at the pleasure of the District Attorney.

Minimum Requirements:Ten (10) years of experience as a detective employed by a Police Department or Investigator employed by a District Attorney’s Office located in the State of New York, with specific prior experience as a Systems Administrator for the SyTech ADACS Platform, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) Electronic Surveillance Platform approved for use in eavesdropping warrants. Prior experience in covert neutralization of locks, locking systems, and surveillance security systems on public and private premises is also required for this position. Applicants must provide specific detail as to their training and experience in the above areas to be considered for this position.

Starting Salary:  $104,896
