Comptroller's Office

JOSEPH SAWICKI, JR.

SUFFOLK COUNTY COMPTROLLER

Joseph Sawicki, Jr. commenced his second four year term as Suffolk County Comptroller on January 1, 2007

Experience:

Comptroller Sawicki began his accounting career in 1976 with Peat, Marwick, Mitchell and Co. (now KPMG) where he worked for two years in their Garden City office.  He joined the Suffolk County Comptroller’s office in 1978 as an auditor; in January 1979 he was promoted to Deputy Comptroller.

In November 1982 he was elected to the New York State Assembly where he served for nearly six terms.  He was the ranking Republican member of the Assembly committees for Ethics and Guidance; Commerce, Industry and Economic Development.

In 1993 he accepted the position of Comptroller/CFO of the Suffolk Regional Off-Track Betting Corporation.  In January 2000 he was appointed Chief Deputy County Treasurer where he served until his election as CountyComptroller in 2002.

Accomplishments:

As Comptroller, he is responsible for preparing the annual financial statements of the County.  As such, each year his office has been awarded the “Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting” by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States.

Another top priority of Mr. Sawicki is staying in close communication with the major Wall Street bond rating agencies to keep them abreast of the County’s financial condition.  High credit ratings save on interest costs to the County which translates to savings to the taxpayer.  During Mr. Sawicki’s first term in office, the County earned three credit upgrades from Moody’s, two from Standard and Poor’s (S&P) and one from Fitch.  The current credit rating from each of these agencies is the highest in Suffolk’s history.

Comptroller Sawicki received recognition from the nationally recognized accounting organization, the Institute of Management Accountants, by being honored as their “Financial Executive of the Year 2005.”

Education/Personal:

Joseph Sawicki graduated cum laude in 1976 from Siena College with a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree with a major in accounting.

He is a lifelong resident of Southold where he resides with his wife and two sons.

Position Statement:

Mr. Sawicki is firmly committed to maintaining the integrity of the Office of the Comptroller; he prides himself on being the County’s fiscal watchdog eliminating waste, abuse and fraud in government and its related agencies.  His administration’s goal is to conduct the office in an objective, independent and non-partisan manner when it comes to auditing taxpayer dollars.
