Human Rights Commission

The Suffolk County Human Rights Commission (SCHRC) is a county agency that was created in 1963 to enforce the various laws against discrimination.  The Commission became part of the Department of Law in 1993.  The primary objective of the Commission is to work toward the elimination of bias and discrimination in Suffolk County.  This is achieved through public education and complaint investigation.

The Suffolk County Human Rights Commission consists of 15 Commission members who volunteer their time to meet monthly and establish policy, and 4 full-time paid staff members.

The Commission accepts complaints regarding equal opportunity in several categories:

  • Employment
  • Housing
  • Places of Public Accommodation
  • Credit
  • Volunteer Firefighting

If you feel that you have been discriminated against, contact our office and ask to speak with an investigator.  You can also download an Intake Form and mail it to the Commission for us to look into your complaint.

Laws protecting equal rights in the four areas above apply to all persons, regardless of the individual's:

Race

Color
Creed Religion
National Origin Disability
Age Sex
Gender Sexual Orientation
Marital Status Familial Status
Military Status Arrest Record
Conviction Record Predisposing Genetic Characteristics

Status as a Victim of Domestic Violence

In addition to investigating violations of the Human Rights laws, the Commission is also mandated to take complaints of undue force and unprofessional conduct against the Suffolk County Police Department.
