The Suffolk County Department of Parks offers our residents a variety of hunting opportunities. Waterfowl hunting is available on the Carmans River at Southaven County Park, and on the freshwater ponds and saltwater marshes of Hubbard County Park. At Cedar Point County Park in East Hampton regular duck hunting or beach shooting for sea ducks is offered. Migratory waterfowl also frequent the Big Reed Pond at Theodore Roosevelt County Park. Due to the popularity of this program, the Parks Department imposes certain restrictions over state and federal regulation in the interest of safety and game protection.
For those interested in bigger game, the Parks Department also offers an Archery Season for deer at the following parklands: Warbler Woods, Suffolk Hills, Hubbard, Cedar Point, Northwest Harbor County Parks, and Pine Meadows County Park. Residents of the town of East Hampton may also hunt in Six Pole Woodland County Park, Hog Creek Woodland County Park, and Jacob's Farm County Park in East Hampton, with proper town permits as well as county permits. The Parks Department in cooperation with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, also offers a special Long Island shotgun and muzzle loading rifle deer season for three weeks in January. The department offers hunting areas through a lottery system for the first two weeks in January at Theodore Roosevelt County Park, and on a first come first served basis for the third week in January at Theodore Roosevelt and for all three weeks in January at Hubbard County Park.
Applications for the lottery for the Special L.I. Shotgun & Muzzle Loading Rifle Deer Hunting Season for 2009 are available at the West Sayville Operations Office, Southaven, Indian Island, Sears-Bellows and Theodore Roosevelt County Parks.
