Alzheimer's/Dementia Unit
Caring for those with reduced cognitive capability calls for a great degree of sensitivity and understanding on the part of the caregiver. Alzheimer’s Disease is a brain disorder that gradually destroys an individual’s memory, along with such basic mental processes as learning, reasoning, and communicating. Eventually it interferes with their ability to carry out the simplest daily activities and may also cause changes in both personality and behavior.
The staff at John J. Foley is experienced with the special care required by such individuals, and by those suffering from other forms of dementia. We also know how deeply such conditions affect members of the resident’s family. Our special Alzheimer’s/Dementia unit is designed to maximize the ability of the residents to interact socially with each other and their families in a safe environment. They are provided with an ongoing program of meaningful, interesting and stimulating recreational activities designed to promote physical, mental and psycho-social well being. It even includes a unique and private outdoor walking garden scheduled to open in 2007.
"Happy Hearts"
Participation in our Happy Hearts Program includes staff, family members and friends of residents in our Alzheimer’s/Dementia Unit. The Happy Hearts Group plans special events throughout the year to enhance interaction between residents and those closest to them. A "Family Photo Day", ice cream sundae socials, and a Chinese auction are just a few examples of our Happy Hearts activities. |
