A Message from Legislator Kate M. Browning

Thank you for electing me to represent you as Legislator for Suffolk County’s Third District. I will be a strong voice in the Legislature for working families as I fight to protect our children, defend our seniors, and ensure that our community is a safe, affordable, and peaceful place to live.

I am working hard for common sense programs that invest in our children. We need to make sure our children receive a quality education in a safe environment. I am also fighting each day to hold the line on our property taxes, protect the rights of workers, restore and preserve our environment, and look out for the well being of our senior citizens.

I want you to know that the door to my office is always open, and I will do everything within my power as a legislator to address your issues and concerns.

Biography

Suffolk County Legislator Kate Browning was elected to office in November 2005. She defines herself as a working mother and an activist. Before taking office, Legislator Browning worked as a school bus driver in order to make ends meet and have the same hours as her children while they attended school. She and her husband, Steve, have three children: Aoife, Sean, and Aodhan.

Born and raised Catholic in war-torn Belfast, Northern Ireland, Legislator Browning was subjected to violence and discrimination throughout The Troubles. At 19, Browning left Belfast for Germany, where she met Steve, who was serving in the U.S. military. The couple settled in Shirley in 1989.

Legislator Browning is proud of her husband and her son, Sean, who both serve in the military. Steve is a police officer in New York City and retired from the Army National Guard in 2006. Sean is a member of the Air National Guard. Aoife, 25, lives in Colorado and Aodhan, 12, attends William Floyd School District. Legislator Browning is a volunteer for Steve’s unit’s Families Readiness Group, a support group that helps families cope with their loved ones serving overseas.

As an elected official, Kate is a strong voice for working people throughout Suffolk County. She continues to support legislation that will ease the tax burden on our families and seniors in her district. She is fighting to protect our environment, including the Forge and Carmans Rivers, and preserve open space.

While driving a bus for the William Floyd School District in Shirley, Browning became active in Local 252. Kate has experience fighting for what she believes in, as she has been at the forefront of tough contract negotiations at every bargaining cycle. Kate spent four years as a shop steward and four years as an assistant shop steward, advocating for the rights of her fellow workers.

Legislator Browning’s interest in labor law and politics led her to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree from the National Labor College in Silver Spring, Md.

Legislator Browning is involved in five Legislative Committees. She’s the chair of the Labor, Workforce & Affordable Housing Committee, the Vice Chair of the Public Safety & Public Information Committee, and a member of the Consumer Protection, Public Works & Transportation, and Parks & Recreation Committees. Other County-Commissioned committees she is a member of include the Dredge Screening Committee and the Yaphank Development Review Committee.
