The Office of the Chief of Department |
The Chief of Department exercises line and staff command of all personnel and operations of the Police Department. The Chief’s office is responsible for command and control authority, and performs management services required to ensure the Department serves Suffolk County in an efficient and effective manner. The Office of the Chief of Department keeps the Police Commissioner informed of all important matters and of any action taken regarding said matters. The Office of the Chief of Department also acts as liaison to state and local probation and parole agencies and to federal, state and local adult and juvenile correctional agencies.

Chief of Department – Chief Robert Anthony Moore holds a Master of Business Administration degree and is a graduate of the FBI Academy as well as the Police Command College. He joined the Suffolk County Police Department in 1975 and has been the Commanding Officer of the Police Academy Bureau, Systems and Procedures Section, Community Policing Services Bureau, and the North Shore Satellite Station. He has been a professor of business management at Suffolk Community College, and a professor of policy and management at the New School for Social Research Graduate School of Urban Policy. |

This command is a staff unit responsible for the administration of the Recruitment Section which recruits qualified candidates for the position of police officer, the P.A.L. Section which supervises the activities of the Suffolk County Police Athletic League, the Crime Stoppers Section, the Public Information Section which disseminates information and acts as liaison to the public and the news media, the Employee Assistance Section which provides counseling, information and referral assistance to members of the Department, and the Chaplains Section which maintains liaison with the Department’s chaplains. The Bureau is also responsible for monitoring the accreditation status of the Department. It acts as liaison between the Department and community groups and/or leaders and implements and coordinates projects pertaining to community issues. |
