The Office of the Chief of Detectives
The Detective Division is headed by the Chief of Detectives, who is responsible for the investigative activities associated with serious offenses. Among the offenses for which members of the Detective Division conduct investigations are attempted suicide, gambling, motor vehicle theft, homicide, arson, burglary, hate related incidents, and sex offenses.


Chief of Detectives – Chief Dominick Varrone holds a Master of Professional Studies degree in Criminal Justice Leadership from St. John's University and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy.  He joined the Suffolk County Police Department in 1972.  He has been the Chief of Support Services, Assistant Chief of Patrol and the Commanding Officer of the Second Precinct, Precinct Detective Bureau, District Attorney Section, Community Response Unit, Kidnap Investigation Team, Hostage Negotiations Team, and First Squad Detectives.


Precinct Detective Bureau

Members of this bureau provide investigative services within designated geographic areas.  Each of the seven Precinct Detective Bureau Squads also contains a Neighborhood Enforcement/Special Operations Team (NE/SOT).  The NE/SOT teams investigate, structure, and combat street drug sales and possessions.  Members of this bureau also perform the necessary processing of a perpetrator under the age of 16.


The Special Services Bureau

This bureau is responsible for the administration and supervision of investigative supporting functions such as polygraph, fingerprint/identification, computer crimes, and identity theft. These services are provided to the other detective bureaus in support of the investigation of crime and the detection and arrest of perpetrators.


Major Crimes Bureau

This bureau is responsible for the administration and supervision of the investigation of major felonies among which are homicide, arson, narcotics, and sex crimes.  This bureau is also responsible for the immediate notification to the Chief of Detectives of the occurrence of a murder, suspected murder, non-negligent manslaughter, assault where death is likely to result, all major disasters, and any injury to a member of the division.  Homicide investigation support is provided by this bureau to law enforcement agencies in other local municipalities.


Hate Crimes Unit
This command is responsible for the investigation and case preparation of violations of law perpetrated primarily due to a belief or perception regarding race, color, national origin, ancestry, gender, religion, religious practice, age, disability or sexual orientation.  The Hate Crimes Unit also maintains files and statistics relative to such incidents.
