The Office of the Deputy Police Commissioner |
| The Deputy Commissioner acts for and assists the Commissioner. In this capacity, the Deputy Police Commissioner acts as liaison officer for the Police Commissioner in matters relating to the public and criminal justice system, and meets with individuals, groups, associations, organizations and commissions on behalf of the Police Commissioner. The Deputy Police Commissioner has oversight responsibility of the Medical Evaluation Bureau, Internal Affairs Bureau, and the Pistol Licensing Bureau.

Deputy Police Commissioner – Deputy Commissioner Roger Shannon holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the New York Institute of Technology and joined the Suffolk County Police Department in 1964. During his career he moved up the ranks and has been the Commanding Officer of the Pistol Licensing Bureau, Community Services Bureau, and the Internal Affairs Section. He retired in 1993 at the rank of Assistant Chief. In January, 2004, he was appointed to the position of Deputy Police Commissioner of the Suffolk County Police Department.

The Internal Affairs Bureau |
Investigates allegations of misconduct against members of the Department, conducts internal investigations as directed by the Police Commissioner and performs ongoing inspections of Department personnel and equipment. The Internal Affairs Bureau is also mandated to identify and seek correction of unclear or inappropriate agency procedures and organizational conditions that may contribute to misconduct or inefficiency.
- Field Auditing Section Conducts inspections and audits of Department members to ensure compliance with State and local laws and the Department's Rules and Procedures as they relate to line of duty injury leave and sick leave.

Deputy Inspector, Commanding Officer, Internal Affairs Bureau –Deputy Inspector Christopher Hatton holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business- Economics from SUNY Oneonta. He joined the Suffolk County Police Department in 1987 and his previous assignments include Commanding Officer of the Fourth Precinct Crime Section and Executive Officer of Internal Affairs Bureau. Deputy Inspector Hatton has been Commanding Officer of Internal Affairs Bureau since January, 2010.

| This command is responsible for the investigation and licensing of pistol permit applicants, pistol manufacturers, pistol dealers and gunsmiths. The Pistol Licensing Bureau maintains the pistol records of members of the Service. The Bureau also reports to the New York State Police any changes in the status (i.e., sale, acquisition, destruction, transfer) of handguns of licensees. |
