Effective immediately the Pistol Licensing Bureau has begun a “PILOT PROGRAM”. This program will make it no longer necessary to provide handgun information when obtaining a PURCHASE DOCUMENT, the expiration however, will remain TEN (10) DAYS .

PISTOL LICENSE FUNCTION - A 1972 amendment to Section 265 of the New York State Penal Law designated the Police Commissioner as the Licensing Officer in Suffolk's five western towns. In addition, Article 400 - Titled, Licensing and other Provisions Relating to Firearms mandates certain administrative procedures concerning the issuance, renewing, filing, cancellation, and revocation of licenses to possess, carry, and deal in firearms. The Pistol License function was created to satisfy the legal requirements imposed on the Police Department by the aforementioned sections of the Penal Law.
