Hauppauge, NY-- Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco today received the 2014 Public Service Award from the Suffolk County Martin Luther King Jr. Commission at its annual awards luncheon at the Hyatt Regency Wind Watch in Hauppauge. The Commission is a unique organization dedicated to achieving social justice through education, advocacy and training.  Others honored today included Jacqueline S. Harris, Dr. David Bynum, Rufus Shepard, the Central Islip High School-Concert Choir, Dr. Lorna Lewis, Ellen Edelstein, Hon. Jon Cooper and Marcos Maldonado.

Upon receiving his award, Sheriff DeMarco thanked the Commission and stated, “It’s truly special to be among such a dedicated group of individuals, and to be recognized for the unique ways in which we can all help further Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s vision for America, and the world in which we live.”

He also talked about the organization of the Sheriff’s Office Citizens Advisory Board (SOCAB), which he announced on January 16th, to improve communication between law enforcement and the county’s residents through education, public input and training for Sheriff’s Office employees. It is the first of its kind to be launched in Suffolk County.

Sheriff DeMarco added, “I support the Martin Luther King Jr. Commission’s ongoing work and hope that the Citizens Advisory Board will represent another forum to work together to ensure that people from all walks of life and diverse communities can work together to improve public safety for all of the County’s residents.”
