On March 31, 2017, a 40 year old male from Mastic was arrested by Deputy Sheriffs of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office after a traffic stop revealed he was driving while intoxicated with his 9 year old daughter in the vehicle.

At approximately 12:57 a.m., Deputy Sheriff Thomas Young of the Sheriff’s Office SPIDRE (Sheriff's Proactive Impaired Driving Enforcement) unit observed a car speeding and failing to properly maintain its lane westbound on Sunrise Highway near exit 37 in Lindenhurst.  Deputy Young conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle and observed that the driver, Darrell Mims, had slurred speech, bloodshot eyes, unsteady movements, and an odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath.  The driver admitted to having consumed alcohol and performed poorly on standardized field sobriety tests.

The driver was arrested for driving while intoxicated.  Additionally, Mims had his 9 year old daughter as a passenger in the vehicle and was driving with a suspended license due to a conviction for driving while ability impaired by alcohol.  The child was turned over to the custody of her mother.  The results of the blood test to determine the blood alcohol content of Darrell Mims is pending laboratory results by the Suffolk County Crime Laboratory.

Mims was charged with Felony Aggravated DWI with a Child, Felony Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Endangering the Welfare of a Child, and other traffic offenses.

Darrell Mims will be arraigned at 1st District Court in Central Islip on March 31, 2017.
