Our Mission

The County Attorney is charged with handling primarily all civil legal business of the Suffolk County government and its agencies.

The County Attorney provides legal representation and advice on matters related to the actions and deliberations of all personnel and organizations within Suffolk County government. The County Attorney is responsible for prosecuting and defending all civil actions and proceedings brought by or against the County, the County Legislature, and any officer whose compensation is paid for from County funds for an official act.

No, by law the County Attorney is the legal advisor to the County. While it is the job of the County Executive and Legislature to serve the residents of Suffolk County, the County Attorney's job is to give legal advice to all elected county officials, as well as County Departments, agencies, and commissions on governmental matters. The County Attorney cannot offer you personal legal counsel.
