Public Health Logo

June 16, 2020

This update relates to investigations and remedial activities that are being undertaken at the Northport Middle School under the Suffolk County Sanitary Code, enforced by the Suffolk County Department of Health Services. The Northport-East Northport School District is also undertaking a more comprehensive environmental assessment of the Middle School. Please refer to the School District for an update on that assessment.

The Suffolk County Department of Health Services has been working with the Northport-East Northport School district on the remediation of underground leaching structures (e.g., leaching pools and sanitary systems), also known as UICs (underground injection control) at the Northport Middle School in accordance with the Suffolk County Sanitary Code.

The Department received a UIC Investigation Letter Report on March 6th from the School District’s consultant, PW Grosser Consulting, Inc. This report contains information and sampling data on leaching pools and sanitary systems located at the School. The Department has completed its review of this report and in accordance with the Suffolk County Sanitary Code, issued a NOTICE to the school district that remediation of specific UIC structures is required. Removal of contaminated sediments and liquids from the leaching pools and sanitary systems began the week of March 9 and was completed on April 1, 2020. Following the completion of the removal of sediments and liquids, end-point samples were collected to ensure that the removal was complete. Upon review of the UIC Remediation Report which details the remedial activities and lists the analytical results for the end-point samples from each leaching structure, the Department concluded that no further remediation of these structures would be required at this time. A letter of No-Further Action regarding the UIC remediation was issued by the Department on June 1, 2020.
