COVID-19 update 09-25-23

Suffolk County reported the following information related to COVID-19 on September 24, 2023

According to CDC, hospital admission rates and the percentage of COVID-19 deaths among all deaths are now the primary surveillance metrics.

COVID-19 Hospitalizations for the week ending September 9, 2023

• New hospital admissions of confirmed COVID-19 patients: 295
• Percent change of hospital admissions from prior week: 9.3%
• Hospital admissions per 100k in the past week: 10.4
• COVID-19 hospital admissions level: MEDIUM

Daily Hospitalization Summary for Suffolk County – From September 22, 2023

• 143 individuals were hospitalized
• 56% were hospitalized due to COVID-19 or complications of COVID-19.
• 22 were new admissions since the last report.
• 15 were discharged since the last report.
• 12 patient in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
• 0 patients in the ICU and intubated.

Fatalities (Data as of 9/22/23)

• 5,054 fatalities since March 2020
• An increase of 2 since last report

• 307 new first-time cases were reported.*
• 20.7 cases per 100k; 24.8 on a 7-day average (includes reported PCR and antigen tests)
• 4.9 reinfection rate per 100,000 on Long Island, as reported on August 29, 2023.

Note: As of September 1, 2023, positive results represent all positive tests reported to New York State, including both first infections and reinfections. Before this date, reinfections were reported on a separate dashboard. The reinfections dashboard has been archived and is available here.

Note: As of May 11, 2023, COVID-19 Community Levels (CCLs) and COVID-19 Community Transmission Levels are no longer calculatable, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

* As of 4/4/22, HHS no longer requires entities conducting COVID testing to report negative or indeterminate antigen test results. This may impact the number and interpretation of total test results reported to the state and also impacts calculation of test percent positivity. Because of this, as of 4/5/22, test percent positivity is calculated using PCR tests only. Reporting of total new daily cases (positive results) and cases per 100k will continue to include PCR and antigen tests.

As of September 13, 2023 and until further notice, the Suffolk County Department of Health Services is not offering the COVID-19 vaccine. We are awaiting updated guidance regarding the recently approved COVID-19 vaccines and will communicate further when we have information to share.
