World AIDS Day 2015 Events

The time to act is now

December 1, 2015, is World AIDS Day. The Suffolk County Department of Health Services and its community partners encourage residents to do what they can this month to stop the spread of HIV, whether it is getting tested, participating in outreach and educational events, donating to help find a cure or encouraging those who are at a substantial risk for HIV to consider pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), a daily pill for that prevents HIV. Following is a list of World AIDS Day events.


Suffolk Health Outreach Partnerships (SHOPS)
Suffolk County Department of Health Services’ Office of Minority Health and the Long Island Minority AIDS Coalition (LIMAC) are offering in-shop discussions, handouts, and information on where to be tested locally.

HRH Care World AIDS Day Art Show

World AIDS Remembrance Day

Join Long Island GLBT for a Candlelight Vigil for a roll call of Loved Ones, World AIDS Day tree decoration with names and/or pictures of loved ones who have passed and contribute to the LI GLBT Network World AIDS Day Quilt. Free HIV/STD testing will be available throughout the event and $20 gift cards will be given for any gay or bisexual men who test.

Celebrating 25 Years of C.A.R.E. & Compassion
The United Way of Long Island and the Nassau-Suffolk HIV Health Service Planning Council will celebrate World AIDS Day and the 25th anniversary of the Ryan White CARE Act on December 4 with a memorial ceremony, dinner and awards presentations. The Ryan White program grants federal money to Suffolk and Nassau Counties to provide services for individuals and families infected and affected by HIV/AIDS.

Rogers Center: What Every Clinician Needs to Know

The David E. Rogers, Center of Southampton Hospital is hosting lectures on the New York State HIV Testing Law and Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis and the governor’s plan to end AIDS. Ilvan Arroya, Associate Director of the Center for Public Health Education at Stony Brook University is the featured speaker. Breakfast will be served.

Rogers Center: Lunch with Friends

The David E. Rogers Center of Southampton Hospital is also inviting residents to share a day of global action and awareness as well as lunch. There will be no meeting, program, speakers, training, conference or lectures. They seek only your company.

Free and Confidential HIV/STI Testing

LIGALY offers free, quick, and confidential HIV/STI testing at its community centers across Long Island. Get results in as little as 20 minutes, by appointment or during drop-in hours. Free condoms are available, as well.

Where: The Center at Bay Shore

When: Drop-In Hours are Wednesdays from 5:00pm – 8:00pm and second Fridays of the month from 7:00pm – 9:00pm (ages 13-21 only)

Where: The Center at Woodbury

When: Drop-In Hours are Thursdays from 5:00pm – 8:00pm

LIAAC: AIDS Education and Testing Initiative

The Long Island Association for AIDS Care offers community based services, including rapid HIV, hepatitis C and STI testing, throughout the year on its mobile van. Call on the hotline 1-877-865-4222 to ask the mobile van to visit your neighborhood.

 

LIMAC: Syringe Exchange Program

The Long Island Minority AIDS Coalition (LIMAC) exists to raise awareness for AIDS and HIV and bring change to the lives of those they serve in the Long Island community.  The coalition runs a syringe exchange program. 

Where:  The Harm Reduction Mobile Van parks on Camp Upton Road off Montauk Highway in Shirley, across from new Best Yet

When: Every Tuesday and Thursday between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. throughout the year.

Where: The Harm Reduction Mobile Van parks at the corner of Bedell and Main Streets in Hempstead

When: Every Monday and Friday between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. throughout the year.
