Bellone, Tomarken Offer Free Smoking Cessation Course in Mastic

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and Health Commissioner James Tomarken Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County encourage residents in the Mastic area to take advantage of a free course to help them quit smoking.

The classes will be held as follows:

Tuesdays, June 17, 24; July 1, 8, 8; and reunion class on Tuesday, July 29, from 6:00 p.m.

Mastic Recreation Center

15 Herkimer St., Mastic, NY

Contact: 281-7655

Classes are free. Smoking cessation medications will be provided to medically eligible participants for a nominal fee.

“We have in Suffolk County the resources to enable our residents who smoke to quit and become healthier, and the best part is that the program is  essentially free.” said Bellone. “Ultimately, we hope to help not only the individual but also the community as a whole by increasing our health outcomes and reducing the health-care costs associated with tobacco use.”

“Suffolk County has led the way in tobacco control efforts,” said Dr. Tomarken. “This program has made a difference in the lives of so many individuals who have been successful in kicking the habit.”

Approximately 18,000 individuals have participated in our Learn to Be…Tobacco Free cessation program since its inception in 2000.
