Fishing is a popular leisure time activity enjoyed by many Suffolk County residents. Thanks to careful acquisition of lands and astute conservation efforts by the Parks Department, some of the best fresh and saltwater fishing opportunities on Long Island are available in your Suffolk County parks.
Ranging from the fighting bluefish to the delicate rainbow trout, an assortment of fish reside in ponds, rivers, and ocean waters in several county parks.
Freshwater fishing is available at Blydenburgh, Lake Ronkonkoma , Sears Bellows, Southaven, Millers Pond, and at Big Reed Pond at Montauk County Park. The parks offer freshwater lake and pond fishing for pumpkinseed, largemouth bass, perch and bluegills. Bait permitted. New York State rules prevail. Fishing permitted between sunrise and sunset. Freshwater fisherman are reminded that a New York State fishing license is required. Fisherman at Southaven Park are required to have an additional Suffolk County daily fishing permit. Big Reed Pond in Montauk permits hand launched boats with electric motors.
Surfcasters and other saltwater fisherman can try their luck at Cedar Point, Charles F. Altenkirch, Cordwood Landing, Cupsogue, Indian Island, Montauk County Park, Northwest Harbor County Park, Orient Point County Park, Shinnecock Canal, Shinnecock East County Park and Smith Point. The parks offer saltwater fishing and surfcasting for bluefish and striped bass and also, shore fishing for snappers and blowfish. Fishing permitted between sunrise and sunset. Saltwater fishing anglers are required to register for the free recreational marine fish registry prior to fishing the marine waters of New York State per NYS DEC.
Night Fishing Permit
To insure that surfcasters may enjoy increased fishing opportunities, the Parks Department sells night fishing permits for access to parks during the hours they are normally closed (10PM - 6AM). Permits are valid only at the following locations: Smith Point, Shinnecock East, Charles F. Altenkirch, Orient Point County Park, Cupsogue, Shinnecock Canal, Cordwood Landing, Lake Ronkonkoma, and Montauk County Park. Permits (resident and nonresident) can be purchased at Smith Point, Shinnecock East, Sears Bellows, Montauk County Park and West Sayville Administration Office. There is no charge for the Night Fishing permit if you purchase a Suffolk County Park Recreation Vehicle Use permit (the Outer Beach Permit).Call the administration office (631) 854-4949 for further information and fees.
