The Peconic Estuary is part of the National Estuary Program (NEP), which aims to protect and preserve nationally significant estuaries that are threatened by pollution, development, or overuse. The Peconic Estuary was named an “estuary of national significance” in 1992.
The Peconic Estuary Program is sponsored by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, and the Suffolk County Department of Health Services (SCDHS). PEP collaborates with many Suffolk County departments as part of its Reclaim Our Water initiative and is hosted in the Department of Health Service’s Division of Environmental Quality.
