Suffolk County Executive Bellone Announces Next Round of Monkeypox Vaccinations

County to Partner with Northwell Health, Stony Brook Medicine and Sun River Health to Host Additional Pop-Up Clinics

Eligible Individuals Can Visit www.SuffolkCountyNY.gov/Monkeypox to Make an Appointment

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today announced the County has received 4,080 Monkeypox vaccinations from New York State and will be partnering with Northwell Health, Stony Brook Medicine and Sun River Health to host pop-up clinics.

“Although Monkeypox cases remain low here in Suffolk, it is critical that we continue to offer vaccinations to our residents to ensure the safety of everyone,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. “Through our new partnership with Sun River Health, we are expanding the footprint of our pop-up clinics, offering even more opportunities for our residents to get vaccinated.”

Suffolk County Health Commissioner Dr. Gregson Pigott said: "We continue to see the spread of this virus in our communities. Although it has not led to fatalities, it can cause significant discomfort. Thankfully we have been provided a vaccine that will help to contain this illness."

Hal Paz, Chief Executive Officer at Stony Brook University Medicine said: "It has been a true partnership and collective effort between Stony Brook Medicine and the Suffolk County Department of Health to deliver Monkeypox vaccines to our community. To protect the health and safety of our community, we have partnered with Suffolk County to deliver 300 additional doses at the Stony Brook Medicine Edie Windsor Healthcare Center in Hampton Bays in the coming weeks."

Annabella Salvador, MD, senior vice president of medical affairs and deputy chief medical officer at Northwell Health said: “Vaccination is an important step forward in the fight against Monkeypox and offers us hope in stopping this disease. We’re grateful to New York State and Suffolk County departments of health for advocating for more vaccine so that we can continue these efforts. It is extremely important to encourage those who are considered high risk to get vaccinated.”

Aarathi Nagaraja, MD, Sun River Health Infectious Disease Specialist said: “There is an effective vaccine for Monkeypox, but it is being prioritized for those at risk, including those who have been exposed to someone with a rash through direct skin-to-skin or respiratory contact for a prolonged period of time. Vaccines are administered as two doses, each four weeks apart. Studies have shown that there is an effective antibody response two weeks after the second vaccine dose.”
