In Suffolk County, administration of the Civil Service Law is carried out under the direction of the Suffolk County Personnel Director. The Suffolk County Department of Civil Service is responsible for overseeing personnel actions taken by some 241 employing jurisdictions including school districts, towns, villages water districts, library districts, etc. Collectively, these jurisdictions employ some 40,000 individuals.

The majority of all jobs fall within the competitive class, which is characterized by examinations used to ascertain the relative merit and fitness of candidates. Announcements for current examinations are available on this site by clicking on Current List of Exams. Examination announcements are also posted in the Hauppauge Office of the Suffolk County Department of Civil Service and at our Riverhead Office located in the Riverhead County Center.

This site contains a section for Frequently Asked Questions. In addition, the Department's Information Unit in Hauppauge is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 5 PM for further information. Effective September 1, 2010 the Riverhead Office will be open every Wednesday from 9 AM to 4:30 PM, year around.

 TRANSPORTATION COORDINATOR

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS : Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree, and three (3) years of experience in transportation program planning or transportation administration; or

Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and seven (7) years of experience in transportation program planning or administration.

Please Note:  Dispatcher experience is not qualifying experience.  Transportation planning and transportation administration requires the planning and implementation of transportation programs. 

Responsibilities include administrative work in planning and implementing transportation programs, through a contracted management company for the Suffolk County Department of Health Services, which provides transportation to and from school for pre-school children with handicapping conditions, or for the Suffolk County Department of Labor, which provides transportation for youth and public assistance participants who are enrolled in their programs.  The primary focus of this position is to analyze, review and plan transportation programs in order to provide quality services at the lowest possible cost. Work is performed under the general supervision of a high level administrator.  Supervision may be exercised over support personnel.

Starting salary:  52,435 plus excellent benefit package

Seasonal Park Ranger I For Suffolk County Parks

Candidates must have Graduated from high school or possess a high school equivalency diploma.

  • Candidates must be 20 years of age at the time of appointment
  • Candidates must pass a qualifying medical, psychological and physical agility evaluation
  • Candidates must be a United States citizen at the time of appointment
  • At the time of appointment and during employment in this title, employees must possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State
  • Candidates will be required to obtain a Peace Officer Training Certificate recognized by the New York State Municipal Police Training Council.

This work involves the performance of routine seasonal patrol tasks. Under supervision, an employee in this title is responsible for protecting parks by standing watch at a fixed post or patrolling in a vehicle or on foot. The incumbent in this position patrols and protects the grounds of municipally owned parks and related facilities by standing watch at a station or by patrolling the grounds, and has considerable responsibility for the exercise of sound judgment in emergencies.

Hourly Salary: $14.25

Substitute School Crossing Guard

The Suffolk County Police Department is seeking candidates for the position of substitute School Crossing Guard. Substitute School Crossing Guards work on an on-call basis. The hourly rate of pay as of 07/01/16 is $13.27. There is a guarantee of 3.0 hours for every assignment. No other benefits are available. Typical work activities include regulating the directional flow of school children, pedestrian and vehicular traffic at an assigned intersection or school crosswalk; reporting traffic incidents to police authorities for appropriate action ; noting unusual or suspicious occurrences or actions of individuals and alerting police in cases of observed or suspected violations of law and ordinances. Candidates must be able to read and write English. At the time of appointment, and during employment, employees must possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State. Prior to appointment, there will be qualifying psychological and medical evaluations as well as an in-depth background investigation. The Suffolk County Police Department is seeking full time Detention Attendants

Detention Attendants duties include: searching prisoners for weapons, contraband, drugs and other harmful articles; guarding persons detained at a police station house or detention facility pending hearing or transfer to a penal institution. Caring for prisoners who are sick or Intoxicated; accompanying prisoners to court; observing inmates in cells to assure prisoners' wellbeing and adherence to regulations and rules.

Responsible for the cleanliness and sanitation of the dormitory and cells of detention facilities and clerical tasks such as maintaining detention log, sorting documents, data entry, filing, opening and distributing station mail and answering phones and relaying messages.

All candidates must undergo qualifying psychological & medical evaluations as well as an extensive background investigation before being hired. Detention Attendants must obtain a CDL license at their own expense after they are hired.

The annual salary is $31,050.00. Employees are required to join the New York State Retirement System. The current applicable contribution rate is 3% of the gross salary. Employees may also enroll in health insurance coverage. The annual cost for an individual plan is $1,418.53 while the annual cost for a family plan is $3,025.51.

Work is performed under the supervision of assigned supervisory personnel, and is reviewed throughout its progress. Does related work as required.

Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with a Bachelor’s Degree in Urban Design, Urban Planning, Landscape Architecture, or a related field, plus one (1) year of experience planning transit-oriented developments in downtowns or neighborhood centers in suburban areas.

PSYCHIATRIST

The Suffolk County Department of Health Services is seeking a full-time, licensed Psychiatrist to provide mental health consultation, treatment, medication management, suicide risk assessment and prevention in jail settings located in Riverhead and Yaphank and/or mental health clinics operated at three locations in Suffolk County. Additional duties include comprehensive competency examinations and preparation of reports to the court under Article 730 of the New York State Criminal Procedure Law.

This position requires possession of a license to practice medicine in the State of New York, and; three (3) years of resident training in psychiatry and neurology.

The work schedule is very flexible.

Salary commensurate with experience: $140,000 - $155,000 plus excellent benefit package.

Special Investigator

The position of Special Investigator in the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office may arise in the near future. This position is in the exempt class and the appointee serves at the pleasure of the District Attorney.

Minimum Requirements:
Ten (10) years of experience as a detective employed by a Police Department or Investigator employed by a District Attorney’s Office located in the State of New York, with specific prior experience as a Systems Administrator for the SyTech ADACS Platform, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) Electronic Surveillance Platform approved for use in eavesdropping warrants. Prior experience in covert neutralization of locks, locking systems, and surveillance security systems on public and private premises is also required for this position. Applicants must provide specific detail as to their training and experience in the above areas to be considered for this position.
