In Suffolk County, administration of the Civil Service Law is carried out under the direction of the Suffolk County Personnel Director. The Suffolk County Department of Civil Service is responsible for overseeing personnel actions taken by some 241 employing jurisdictions including school districts, towns, villages water districts, library districts, etc. Collectively, these jurisdictions employ some 40,000 individuals.

The majority of all jobs fall within the competitive class, which is characterized by examinations used to ascertain the relative merit and fitness of candidates. Announcements for current examinations are available on this site by clicking on Current List of Exams. Examination announcements are also posted in the Hauppauge Office of the Suffolk County Department of Civil Service and at our Riverhead Office located in the Riverhead County Center.

This site contains a section for Frequently Asked Questions. In addition, the Department's Information Unit in Hauppauge is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 5 PM for further information. Effective September 1, 2010 the Riverhead Office will be open every Wednesday from 9 AM to 4:30 PM, year around.

Workers’ Compensation Claims Examiner

Suffolk County Department of Law is seeking a Workers’ Compensation Claims Examiner who will be responsible for performing difficult examining work in a Workers’ Compensation claims unit. The duties will include making initial determinations to accept or controvert claims by applying New York State Guidelines, processing and maintaining complex records, authorizing payments of medical bills, assuring files are complete, explaining regulations and procedures to affected employees and department administrators, and assisting in identifying possible fraudulent claims.

Minimum Requirements:
Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and three years of experience in applying Workers’ Compensation rules and regulations in the review and processing of claims. Additional education from a New York State or regionally accredited college or university may be substituted for up to two years of the above experience.

Starting Salary:
$39,489 plus an excellent benefit package.

NOTE:
Appointment to this position is on a provisional basis. The employee will be required to take the next examination offered for this title and must be reachable for permanent appointment when the eligible list is established. The employee must be one of the three highest scoring willing acceptors on the examination list in order to continue employment.

Commissioner of Social Services

Suffolk County, New York seeks an accomplished professional to serve as its Commissioner of Social Services. The Commissioner is responsible for an operating budget of over $600M the formation and implementation of administrative policies and procedures and for the organization, direction, and coordination of the work of over 1,800 employees within five major program divisions: Client Benefits, Child Support Enforcement Bureau, Family, Children & Adult services; Medicaid Services; Housing. The Commissioner establishes and maintains the necessary organizational structure in order to efficiently implement and maintain the New York State regulations and standards relative to public welfare programs and submits required reports to the County Executive and the State Department of Social Services.

Requirements:
Graduation with a Bachelor's degree and seven (7) years of experience in a health, education or social service agency, five (5) years of which must have been in an administrative or management position, where there is a responsibility for planning, directing and coordinating the work of a substantial staff working in several units or performing several separate functions.

Salary Range:
$115,000 – $162,000 plus an excellent benefit package.

Note: All appointments to the position of Commissioner of Social Services must be approved by the State Commissioner of Social Services. Appointment in this title is by the County Executive, with confirmation by the Legislature, for a term of five years.

Registerd Nurses

Suffolk County, New York seeks Registered Nurses needed to perform Nursing duties in a Correctional/Jail environment. Must be able to work in a fast paced setting and participate as a team member as well as work independently. Triage and emergent care experience a plus. Hours will be: 11pm – 7 am, 5 days per week with days off to be determined. Comprehensive on the job training will be given during the orientation process which will last up to a month. Training hours will encompass all shifts.

Minimum Requirements:
Candidates must have both a current NYS Registered Nurse License and BLS certification


Licensed Practical Nurses

Public Health Nurse I

Performs professional public health nursing services with individuals and families in home, schools, clinics, institutions or other assigned areas. Responsible for the assessment of nursing care needs of patients and families and provides skilled nursing care as needed. Shift hours are M-F, 9:00 to 5:00.

Minimum Requirements:
Graduation from a NYS or regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing. Professional Registered Nurse’s License, issued by the NYS Education Department

Pharmicist I

This position is located in the Suffolk County Correctional Facility, Yaphank, NY. The duties include preparing and dispensing medically authorized prescription drugs, reviewing prescriptions for drugs as to the appropriateness for dispensing to patients, maintaining contact with pharmaceutical supply companies, pharmacists and health care institutions to maintain current information. In addition, the employee maintains drug inventories and documentation of all narcotics and other controlled substances.

Minimum Requirements:
Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Pharmacy.
*At the time of appointment and during employment in this title, candidates must possess a Pharmacist License issued by the New York State Department of Education.

Psychiatrist II

The Suffolk County Department of Health Services is seeking a full-time, licensed Psychiatrist to provide mental health consultation, treatment, medication management, suicide risk assessment and prevention in jail settings located in Riverhead and Yaphank and/or mental health clinics operated at three locations in Suffolk County. Additional duties include comprehensive competency examinations and preparation of reports to the court under Article 730 of the New York State Criminal Procedure Law.

Requirements:
Possession of a license to practice medicine in the State of New York, and; three (3) years of approved resident training in psychiatry and neurology, and; two (2) years of full time experience in psychiatry or neurology, one (1) year of which must have been in a mental hygiene clinic employing the integrated services of psychiatrists, psychologists and psychiatric social workers.

Special Investigator

Please be advised that an opening for the position of Special Investigator in the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office may arise in the near future. This position is in the exempt class and the appointee serves at the pleasure of the District Attorney.

Minimum Requirements:
Ten (10) years of experience as a detective employed by a Police Department or Investigator employed by a District Attorney’s Office located in the State of New York, with specific prior experience as a Systems Administrator for the SyTech ADACS Platform, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) Electronic Surveillance Platform approved for use in eavesdropping warrants. Prior experience in covert neutralization of locks, locking systems, and surveillance security systems on public and private premises is also required for this position. Applicants must provide specific detail as to their training and experience in the above areas to be considered for this position.

Industrial Engineer

Suffolk County Government is seeking an Industrial Engineer to serve as a member of the County Executive’s Performance Management Team. The incumbent in this position will work in a multi-disciplinary environment, with a County-wide scope and an emphasis on improving operations, productivity, procedures and/or systems. Knowledge of Performance Appraisal, benchmarking and data-driven decision making is particularly valuable. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, Project and Visio, Microsoft Excel Power Pivot, Microsoft BISM and Business Process Modeling Software preferred.

Minimum Requirements:
Graduation from a New York State or regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Engineering and 4 years of experience engaged in tasks such as the following: researching, analyzing and making recommendations for improved productivity procedures , processes, or systems, developing tools for measuring work and reengineering data structures, identifying new performance opportunities or alternative organizational models, initiating cost reductions through consolidations, benchmarking high performance practices or evaluating alternative service delivery methods. A Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering can substitute for two years of experience.

Deputy County Executive - Administration

Suffolk County Government is seeking a Deputy County Executive to be responsible for assisting the County Executive in the management of County government, including the development of policies and procedures for County operations, representing the County Executive at meetings and functions, and serving as liaison between the County Executive's Office and County departments. Work requires considerable independent judgment and initiative.

Preferred Requirements:
Ten years of responsible administrative experience in New York State County government which includes at least four years of experience in recommending and developing policies and procedures on a County-wide basis. Suffolk residency required.
