In Suffolk County, administration of the Civil Service Law is carried out under the direction of the Suffolk County Personnel Director. The Suffolk County Department of Civil Service is responsible for overseeing personnel actions taken by some 241 employing jurisdictions including school districts, towns, villages water districts, library districts, etc. Collectively, these jurisdictions employ some 40,000 individuals.

The majority of all jobs fall within the competitive class, which is characterized by examinations used to ascertain the relative merit and fitness of candidates. Announcements for current examinations are available on this site by clicking on Current List of Exams. Examination announcements are also posted in the Hauppauge Office of the Suffolk County Department of Civil Service and at our Riverhead Office located in the Riverhead County Center.

This site contains a section for Frequently Asked Questions. In addition, the Department's Information Unit in Hauppauge is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 5 PM for further information. Effective September 1, 2010 the Riverhead Office will be open every Wednesday from 9 AM to 4:30 PM, year around.

MAINTENANCE MECHANIC II

The Suffolk County Department of Economic Development and Planning in Westhampton Beach seeks a highly motivated and enthusiastic Maintenance Mechanic II for our Aviation Division at Gabreski Airport.

An employee in this class must be able to exercise sub-craftsman level maintenance and repair to airport facilities. These facilities include County owned buildings and the airport airfield. Duties will include maintenance and/or repair in areas such as: security equipment including specialized locks, cameras and electronic radio equipment; valves, traps, faucets, sinks, toilet bowls and other plumbing fixtures; pavement repair and runway markings; boilers, air-conditioning units, compressors and condensers; all airport maintnenace equipment including, but not limited to, welding snow plows and truck bodies, repairing and maintaining mowing equipment, weed whackers, tractors and push mowers; minor electric and mechanical issues; painting both interior and exterior surfaces; roofing and heating; snow removal on airfield, parking lots and sidewalks; maintain grass on the airfield and around airport buildings.

REQUIREMENTS:

Either:

(a)  Completion of two (2) years of vocational education courses in a vocational school program or in an apprentice or training program in one of the craft areas such as, electricity, plumbing, mechanical, carpentry, boiler operation, masonry and welding; or,

(b)  Two (2) years of experience in minor maintenance or repair work; or,

(c)  An equivalent combination of education, or training, and experience as defined by the limits of (a) and (b); or,

(d)  One (1) year of experience as a Maintenance Mechanic I.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

Possession of the appropriate license issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles.  The type of license required will be determined by the appointing authority with respect to the type of vehicle to be operated; license must be maintained throughout employment in this title.

(CDL License preferred).

Business Intelligence Systems Developer

An employee in this position will be part of a centralized unit performing technical work in the design, development, implementation, enhancement and maintenance of county-wide business intelligence and data warehouse solutions. The employee will assist in the development of systems and technical strategies to enable the identification of new or improved opportunities and enhanced decision-making capabilities.

Minimum Requirements

Graduation with a Bachelor's Degree in computer science, information systems, engineering or a related field from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State, plus a minimum of (2) years of experience utilizing Business Intelligence and/or data warehouse technology to manipulate data and to design and create databases and associated reports.

Note – experience must be with products specifically recognized as Business Intelligence tools. Seasonal Park Ranger I For Suffolk County Parks

  • Candidates must have Graduated from high school or possess a high school equivalency diploma.
  • Candidates must be 20 years of age at the time of appointment
  • Candidates must pass a qualifying medical, psychological and physical agility evaluation
  • Candidates must be a United States citizen at the time of appointment

This work involves the performance of routine seasonal patrol tasks. Under supervision, an employee in this title is responsible for protecting parks by standing watch at a fixed post or patrolling in a vehicle or on foot. The incumbent in this position patrols and protects the grounds of municipally owned parks and related facilities by standing watch at a station or by patrolling the grounds, and has considerable responsibility for the exercise of sound judgment in emergencies.

Substitute School Crossing Guard

The Suffolk County Police Department is seeking candidates for the position of substitute School Crossing Guard. Substitute School Crossing Guards work on an on-call basis. The hourly rate of pay as of 07/01/16 is $13.27. There is a guarantee of 3.0 hours for every assignment. No other benefits are available. Typical work activities include regulating the directional flow of school children, pedestrian and vehicular traffic at an assigned intersection or school crosswalk; reporting traffic incidents to police authorities for appropriate action ; noting unusual or suspicious occurrences or actions of individuals and alerting police in cases of observed or suspected violations of law and ordinances. Candidates must be able to read and write English. At the time of appointment, and during employment, employees must possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State. Prior to appointment, there will be qualifying psychological and medical evaluations as well as an in-depth background investigation. The Suffolk County Police Department is seeking full time Detention Attendants

Detention Attendants duties include: searching prisoners for weapons, contraband, drugs and other harmful articles; guarding persons detained at a police station house or detention facility pending hearing or transfer to a penal institution. Caring for prisoners who are sick or intoxicated; accompanying prisoners to court; observing inmates in cells to assure prisoners' wellbeing and adherence to regulations and rules.

Responsible for the cleanliness and sanitation of the dormitory and cells of detention facilities and clerical tasks such as maintaining detention log, sorting documents, data entry, filing, opening and distributing station mail and answering phones and relaying messages.

All candidates must undergo qualifying psychological & medical evaluations as well as an extensive background investigation before being hired. Detention Attendants must obtain a CDL license at their own expense after they are hired.

The annual salary is $31,050.00. Employees are required to join the New York State Retirement System. The current applicable contribution rate is 3% of the gross salary. Employees may also enroll in health insurance coverage. The annual cost for an individual plan is $1,418.53 while the annual cost for a family plan is $3,025.51.

The Suffolk County Sheriff’s office is seeking qualified, executive-level applicants for the position of UNDERSHERIFF

This individual will be responsible for assisting the Suffolk County Sheriff with the overall administration of the Sheriff’s Office, which employs more than 1,200 sworn and civilian personnel. This position is in the exempt class and the appointee serves at the pleasure of the Sheriff.

The incumbent will assume the responsibilities of the Sheriff in his absence; provide direct oversight to the Sheriff’s Office’s managerial and senior supervisory law enforcement personnel, under the overall supervision of the Sheriff; enforce agency rules and regulations, including disciplinary matters, and assist the Sheriff with maintaining order and the efficient operation of all aspects of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office; supervise and command the Internal Affairs Bureau, Internal Security Unit, Gang Intelligence Unit and Criminal Investigations Bureau, and perform specific duties as assigned by the Sheriff.

Minimum Requirements: A Bachelor’s Degree and 15 years of full-time law enforcement experience. Possession of a Juris Doctorate is preferred, although not a requirement. Experience should include managing confidential and large-scale investigations, with a demonstrated ability to work with local, state and federal criminal justice agencies, as well as interaction with elected officials, department heads and the public.

Salary: $128,673

PSYCHIATRIST

The Suffolk County Department of Health Services is seeking a full-time, licensed Psychiatrist to provide mental health consultation, treatment, medication management, suicide risk assessment and prevention in jail settings located in Riverhead and Yaphank and/or mental health clinics operated at three locations in Suffolk County. Additional duties include comprehensive competency examinations and preparation of reports to the court under Article 730 of the New York State Criminal Procedure Law.

This position requires possession of a license to practice medicine in the State of New York, and; three (3) years of resident training in psychiatry and neurology.

The work schedule is very flexible.

Salary commensurate with experience: $140,000 - $155,000 plus excellent benefit package.
