Community Mental Hygiene Services

The Division of Community Mental Hygiene Services is the local governmental unit responsible for the coordination and oversight of all community services to persons with alcohol and substance abuse problems, mental illness, mental retardation and/or developmental disabilities. Community Mental Hygiene Services is authorized under the New York State Mental Hygiene Law. It functions in concert with New York State’s Office of Mental Health; Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse and the Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities.

The scope of the Division’s responsibilities include:
  • Coordinate and oversee treatment services for mental health, substance abuse and those with mental retardation or developmental disabilities in Suffolk County;
  • Work with communities, consumers and other interested groups to improve services and to pursue program development that is consistent with the Suffolk County/New York State planning process;
  • Establish procedures and implement programs either directly or through contracts with other agencies to serve people suffering from mental illness, substance abuse problems, mental retardation or developmental disabilities.
  • Evaluate those services to ensure that they comply with all pertinent regulations and appropriately serve their intended populations; and
  • Provide education and training either directly or through contracts to increase awareness of chemical dependency, mental illness and developmental disabilities.

Mental Health Clinics

Methadone Maintenance Treatment Programs

Methadone Maintenance Treatment Programs are provided in Huntington, Riverhead, Hauppauge – 200 Wireless Blvd. and Hauppauge-North County Complex.

Individuals in need of methadone treatment can apply for services at the two intake clinics:

For the younger opiate abusers, the Division offers the Young Adult Program at the North County Complex Clinic. This specialized program offers Methadone Maintenance treatment and detoxification to individuals aged 23 and under. This program differs from the traditional Methadone Maintenance Programs in that it provides more intensive treatment and counseling services, involves family members in the treatment process and encourages abstinence from all drugs within three years. Case Management Evaluation Referral And Assessment (CAMERA)

CAMERA coordinates all referrals for case management. It is the responsibility of the case manager to assist the mental health consumer in accessing services that are needed to improve their quality of life, such as housing, outpatient treatment, vocational services, day programming and disability benefits. Court Ordered Assisted Outpatient Treatment (AOT)

Persons served by the AOT program are deemed to be at risk of harm to self or others when not in treatment. They are court ordered to comply with an intensive treatment plan consisting of an array of mental health services including but not limited to clinic treatment, case management and medication management services. Children's Single Point Of Access (SPOA)

SPOA coordinates all mental health case management services available to the children of Suffolk County SPOA personnel also coordinate access to specialized community treatment and respite services provided under the Home and Community Based Services Waiver. Single Point Of Access For Housing (SPA)

SPA coordinates all referrals for adult mental health housing in the community. Contact (631) 231-3562 for more information.

Prevention Services

CHOICES: This is an interactive fourth/fifth grade alcohol, tobacco and other drug prevention curriculum which is offered to Suffolk County School Districts in collaboration with contracted Prevention Specialists. This state-of-the-art program goes beyond outmoded didactic presentations to a comprehensive ten lesson curriculum that emphasizes both social skill building and age appropriate information about the dangers of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. The curriculum includes student workbooks and teacher and parent involvement. The program culminates in a CHOICES graduation ceremony where students demonstrate the skills they have learned and receive a graduation certificate. Parents, family members, community leaders and school personnel are invited to attend.

Lending Library: The Resource Center provides for literature and educational materials to other professionals and the public.

SOS: Something of Substance is a half-hour magazine format program produced ten times a year and distributed monthly to the cable systems on Long Island. Each month the program highlights various mental hygiene services in Suffolk County.

Training and education are provided to community groups, other professionals and constituents upon request.
