Deputy Sheriffs Arrest Man for Assaulting Park Ranger in Pine Barrens

Suffolk County Deputy Sheriffs arrested Elias Genovese, a thirty-eight year old male from Mastic, during a multi-agency ATV Enforcement Detail in the Long Island Pine Barrens Sunday after Mr. Genovese struck a Park Ranger with a two passenger Polaris ATV.

The incident occurred at approximately 6:45 p.m. in Shoreham, where officers from the New York State Police, Sheriff's Office and Parks Department were addressing the Illegal use of ATVs. When Park Rangers attempted to approach Mr. Genovese's vehicle, he ran into the Ranger's ATV, throwing him from the vehicle. Mr. Genovese and his passenger were arrested at the scene. The passenger was charged with Criminal Trespassing 3rd degree. Mr. Genovese was charged with Assault 2nd degree, Criminal Trespassing 3rd degree, Possession of a Weapon 3rd degree and Criminal Mischief 3rd degree. He was arraigned today at First District Court in Central Islip, where he posted $20,000.00 bond.

The Park Ranger was transported to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital via ambulance, where he was treated and released.
