Hauppauge Hamlet, Islip Town, NY
Project Background
The Long Island Greenbelt Trail is a 32-mile network of hiking trails stretching from Sunken Meadow State Park on the Long Island Sound, to Heckscher State Park on the Great South Bay. The trail grants users’ access to five state parks and several County and Town parks along the way.
The County’s Long Island Greenbelt Trail (LIGBT) Crossing and Trail Improvements at Motor Parkway (CR 67) project seeks to implement crossing and trailhead improvements at a key location of the trail, where the trail crosses Motor Parkway (CR 67). Currently, the intersection lacks complete pedestrian infrastructure connecting the trail across Motor Parkway, approximately 300’ east of the South Bedford Avenue intersection.
Funding for Project design, and eventual construction of the improvements, is contributed by New York State Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation (NYSOPRHP) under the Recreational Trails Program (RTP). The RTP is a federal assistance program of the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Highway Administration. In New York State, the RTP is administered by the NYSOPRHP. The RTP provides funds to States to develop and maintain recreational trails and trail-related facilities for both nonmotorized and motorized recreational trail uses. Suffolk County provides matching funds as required.
Project Location
The Project will design crossing improvements and trailhead amenities at the Greenbelt Trail crossing of Motor Parkway, just east of the South Bedford Avenue intersection.
Project Goals
The Project will introduce amenities to complement and help users identify the LIGBT trailheads located at points north and south of the intersection of South Bedford Avenue with Motor Parkway. The creation of pedestrian and bicycle amenities will be designed to encourage broader use of the LIGBT and deliver a priority, short-term project as recommended by the Suffolk County Hike and Bike Master Plan. The Project will feature prominent signage, accessible crosswalk signalization, benches, and informational kiosks for access to the LIGBT.
The Project is anticipated to establish the following key improvements:
- Crossing Improvements
- Accessible Pedestrian Signals
- Curb Ramp Reconstruction
- Curb Face Extension
- Pedestrian Sidewalk or Pathway Extensions
- Trailhead Improvements
- Information Kiosks
- Trail Maps and Signage
- Bench Seating
Project Timeline
The Project is broken into the following phases:
- Concept Plan (10% Design)
- Preliminary Design (40% Design)
- Detailed Design and Contract Bid Documents (100% Design)
Project design is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2026. The design and engineering plans will be used for subsequent implementation of the trail crossing and trailhead improvements.
Concept Plan (10% Design) – Short-Term vs. Long-Term Improvements
As of April 2025, a Concept Plan has been developed for the Project that identifies short-term and long-term improvements. Improvements align with Project goals to encourage greater utilization of the trail network and provide safe passage for non-motorists.
