Shirley Beach in Shirley, and Copiague Harbor Property Owners Association Beach in Copiague, are closed to bathing due to the finding of bacterial levels in excess of acceptable criteria.

Recent sampling performed by SUNY Stony Brook has confirmed new cyanobacteria blooms, more commonly known as blue–green algae, in Forge Pond/Peconic Lake in Calverton. 

A mosquito sample has tested positive for West Nile virus. The sample,was collected on June 30, 2016 in Northport. This is the first mosquito sample to test positive for West Nile virus this year.

The Suffolk County Department of Health Services’ Division of Environmental Quality will hold its regular monthly Board of Review Hearing on Thursday July 14, 2016.
