Our Mission

The Arthropod-Borne Disease Program tests for Arthropod-Borne diseases in order to obtain a more accurate picture of the true incidence and distribution in the County. The program augments public education efforts to encourage tick-borne disease identification and reporting. Educating the public on personal protective measures for tick-borne and mosquito-borne diseases is an ongoing process.

Mosquitoes and Mosquito-Borne Diseases

Mosquitoes are flying insects that feed on human and animal blood. Female mosquitoes feed on blood for egg development. The bite of a mosquito typically results in an itchy welt, but can occasionally transmit diseases such as West Nile Encephalitis and Eastern Equine Encephalitis. There are about 50 different species of mosquitoes in Suffolk County.

Ticks and Tick-Borne
Diseases

A tick bite may cause a person to become sick. Learn about the signs and symptoms of Lyme disease, babesiosis, ehrlichiosis, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Read about the important things you can do to prevent tick bites and the proper way to remove a tick.

Bed Bugs

The common bed bug (Cimex lectularius) is an insect that has various stages in its life cycle: eggs, five juvenile or nymphal stages, and adult males and females. All stages feed on blood but they are not known to transmit any pathogens that cause diseases. Once an infestation is established, bed bugs can be found anywhere in a room; not just on the bed. They don’t jump or fly but move around by crawling.
