Internship Program Information

The Suffolk County Office of the Medical Examiner’s Office (SCOME) supports the continuing education of students interested in the field of forensic science.  SCOME has opportunities that can allow interns to work side by side with forensic pathologists, toxicologists, forensic death investigators, and other Crime Lab professionals (including forensic scientists specializing in drug chemistry, trace evidence, biological sciences [DNA analysis], firearms examination, and questioned document examination.  The internship program can allow students to observe an autopsy examination, assist in the forensic laboratories, and gain knowledge of forensic investigative techniques.

Applicants for an internship at SCOME must be:
18 years or older
In their 3rd or 4th year of college
Enrolled in one of the following areas or related areas of study:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Biochemistry
  • Microbiology
  • Genetics
  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Medical Informatics
  • Forensic Toxicology
  • Medicine

Qualified candidates can mail an Internship Application along with their resume, cover letter, two (2) professional/academic letters of reference, and a copy of the curriculum/syllabus from the course that requires an internship (if applicable) to:

Internships are held during the Summer Break only. All applications must be handed in by March 1.

Applicants should contact the SCOME at 631-853-5555 to ensure that all application materials have been received.  A letter indicating acceptance or denial will be mailed or e-mailed to all applicants.  All applications are reviewed by the Chief Medical Examiner and Internship Coordinators and interns are accepted on a case by case basis.  Acceptance is dependent on office needs, the number of students applying for the semester, the presentation of your resume, and your letters of recommendation. Incomplete applications will not be considered.  Priority will be given to students seeking to earn college credit for completing an internship.
