Our Mission

The Department of Public Works constructs, maintains and operates county properties and designs, constructs and maintains county roads, sewerage systems, buildings and other facilities, such as waterways, bridges, docks and marinas. In addition, the department is responsible for the operation of the Suffolk County Transit System as well as controlling mosquitoes that transmit disease and impact the enjoyment of outdoor activities.

Reclaim Our Water

Through the Suffolk County’s Septic Improvement Program Suffolk County residents may be eligible for combined State and County grants to install an Innovative and Alternative Nitrogen Removal Septic System.

Construction Bids

Effective July 18, 2008, a new section will be added to New York's Labor Law. The new section, known as Labor Law Section 220-h, requires that all workers on a public works construction project (advertised after July 18, 2008) must be certified as having completed an OSHA-approved construction safety and health course which is at least 10 hours long.

Vector/Mosquito Control

The Suffolk County Department of Public Works, Division of Vector Control, is responsible for controlling mosquito infestations that are of public health importance. This work is performed under the authority of the New York State Public Health Law - Article 15, Sections 1500, 1501 and 1502, Suffolk County Local Law - Number 16 and the Suffolk County Charter - Section 8.

Suffolk County Transit

The Suffolk County Department of Public Works (DPW) operates Suffolk County Transit (SCT), a network of 42 bus routes providing mobility and connectivity to a population of over 1.5 million residents spread across an area of 912 square miles. Complementary paratransit service is provided through the Suffolk County Accessible Transportation (SCAT) program.

Fleet Services

The Fleet Service Division of the Department of Public Works is responsible for the purchasing, maintenance and fueling of over 3,000 vehicles and pieces of equipment operated by all agencies of the County.

Sewer District No. 3 Expansion Feasibility Study

The Suffolk County Sewer District No.3 - Southwest Expansion Project (CP 8139) conducted a Feasibility Study to identify the sanitary sewage collection and treatment infrastructure needs for six communities -- Deer Park, North Babylon, West Babylon, Wyandanch, Wheatley Heights and West Islip – to be serviced by Suffolk County Sewer District #3.

Forge River Project

The Forge River Watershed Sewer Project is one of the five projects included in the Suffolk County Coastal Resiliency Initiative. The project proposes to connect parcels in the Mastic Shirley area to a new sewer collection system that will flow to a new wastewater treatment plant and also to establish the Mastic-Shirley Sewer District.
