Recruitment to fill positions is conducted in accordance with New York State Civil Service Law. The majority of Department of Public Works positions are competitive positions in which candidates are subject to a civil service exam. To obtain information about Suffolk County Civil Service titles and see if you qualify, please visit the Suffolk County Department of Human Resources, Personnel and Civil Service page HERE. Automotive Mechanic I

Under supervision of a high level Automotive Mechanic an employee in this class is involved in performing minor automotive maintenance and servicing. Work is performed on a variety of vehicles and auxiliary equipment used by a number of County departments and by all other areas of County responsibility.

Minimum Qualifications
One year of vocational education courses in either a vocational school program or in an apprentice or training program in automotive mechanics or one year of experience in minor repairs and preventive maintenance on automotive equipment.

Maintenance Mechanic I

Performs a variety of semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance and repair of public facilities and properties. Assists higher-level maintenance mechanics, and performs a variety of tasks in craft areas such as plumbing, masonry, carpentry, electricity, welding, machine operations, bridge maintenance work and equipment maintenance.

Minimum Qualifications
One year experience in minor maintenance and repair or completion of one (1) year of vocational education courses in a vocational school program, or in an apprentice or training program in one of the craft areas.

Custodial Worker I

Under direct supervision performs moderately heavy manual work cleaning municipal buildings. Responsible for a variety of housekeeping tasks and occasional minor maintenance during an assigned shift.

Wastewater Treatment Plant Helper

Assist wastewater treatment plant operators in performing a wide variety of unskilled or semi-skilled manual tasks. Work involves the use of hand tools and may require the ability to learn to operate simple machinery or other equipment.

Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma.
New York State Divers License.

Laborer

Performs a variety of light or heavy manual activities in such areas as highway maintenance, incinerator plants, animal shelters, parks and grounds maintenance, sanitation, building maintenance, sewage and water districts, and vector control. Work involves the use of hand tools and may require the ability to learn to operate a variety of common power tools, such as chain saws, lawn mowers, motorized pumps, jackhammers, and small portable power tools.

Bridge Operator

Operates a power-driven drawbridge to insure safe passage of water and land traffic with a minimum of delay. The work involves the performance of related semi-skilled mechanical tasks.

Lock Tender

Directs boat traffic through a County canal by the operation of mechanical locks and water level control valves. The work involves performance of a variety of routine duties in the maintenance of the lock and tide gate facility and its grounds.

Storm Response Equipment Operator (Temporary Position)

Rate: $26.00 per hour

The Suffolk County Department of Public Works is seeking candidates for the position of Storm Response Equipment Operator. This position operates motor vehicles and diesel or gasoline-powered equipment used in maintaining County roads and facilities in response to major storm events. The primary work responsibility is for the efficient operation of a motor vehicle and/or heavy equipment to plow, clear roadways, salt roads and move equipment during weather events. Selected candidates will be placed on a list and called out as needed for storm operations.

Minimum Qualifications
CDL license issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. License must be maintained throughout employment in this position.*
Heavy Equipment Operating and Maintenance Experience
Snow Plowing Experience
Comprehensive Knowledge of Suffolk County Roadways
* All CDL employees are required to submit to a Federal DOT pre-employment drug screening and will be subject to all DOT regulations, including random drug testing during the snow removal season and post-accident testing.

Applications for competitive (tested) titles can be obtained from the Suffolk County Department of Civil Service at Veterans Memorial Highway, North Complex, Bldg. 158, P.O. Box 6100, Hauppauge, New York 11788 or by calling (631) 853-5500. There is a fee for filing an application for an examination. Applications are kept on file pending scheduling of an examination. Once an exam has been scheduled, candidates are notified of the time, date, and location of the exam.
