Romaine Announces $3.05 Million in Improvements to Vanderbilt Museum and Planetarium

Improvements and repairs to planetarium, facades and drainage to keep Vanderbilt ready for future tourism seasons

HAUPPAUGE, NY—Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine today announced $3.05 million in renovations to the Vanderbilt Museum and Planetarium in Centerport, NY 11721.

“The Vanderbilt Museum and Planetarium inspires us with totems of the past while letting us cast a stray eye to the stars,” said Romaine. “Generations of students have drawn from the properties deep history and storied collections that span from the ancient Egyptians to the beginning of the twentieth century.”

“The Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum and Planetarium is a cultural and educational treasure for Suffolk County’s residents and visitors alike,” said Legislator Stephanie Bontempi (LD-18). “These important renovations are a major investment to ensure future generations can continue to explore history, science, and the arts in a world-class museum. I’m proud to support these improvements in one of our County’s most iconic landmarks.”

The multi-million-dollar improvement demonstrates the county’s deep commitment to historical properties and advancing the museum’s objectives.

Project Breakdown:

• $300,000 toward planetarium improvements;
•  $200,000 toward rewiring historical buildings;
• $550,000 toward drainage (driveways, gutters and catch basins);
• $2 million toward updating building facades.

Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum & Reichert Planetarium is an accredited member of the Alliance of Museums of America as well listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
