Suffolk County Executive Bellone Announces Census Job Fair

Event to be Held on February 28 at Suffolk County Community College

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today announced the Suffolk County Department of Labor, Licensing and Consumer Affairs, in conjunction with the U.S. Census Bureau, will be hosting a job fair to hire for the 2020 Census. The job fair will be held on Thursday, February 28 from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the Suffolk County Community College Michael J. Grant Campus in the Sagtikos Arts and Science Center.

“We are in full swing preparing for the 2020 Census, working to ensure we will have the most accurate count possible,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. “I encourage all residents who are currently looking for employment to stop by the job fair next week and learn about the various opportunities the census provides.”

The U.S. Census Bureau is recruiting thousands of people across the Country to assist with the 2020 Census count. Residents will be able to earn extra income while helping their community. The job fair offers the opportunity for residents to learn about the importance of the Census, available temporary job opportunities, and the option to apply in person.

Representatives from the United States Census Bureau will be at the event to assist potential applicants with any questions they may have. Available positions include census takers, recruiting assistants, office staff, and supervisory staff. To be eligible, residents must be at least 18 years old, have a valid Social Security number, and be a U.S. citizen. Pay ranges from $17.00 - $23.00 an hour, with flexible hours, and paid training. Residents can also apply online at 2020census.gov/jobs. 

Last month, County Executive Bellone announced the creation of the Suffolk County Complete Count Committee to ensure that all county residents are accurately counted and represented in the 2020 U.S. Census. The goal of the County’s Complete Count Committee is to maximize participation, increase the response rate and educate residents on how to respond. For the first time, the 2020 U.S. Census will allow residents to respond online, in addition to by phone or mail.  

Suffolk County’s actions complement those at the state level as well. Prior to the launch of Suffolk County’s Complete Count Committee, the County Executive was appointed by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to the New York State Complete Count Commission to inform and help direct the State’s efforts.
