Commissioner of Health Services James Tomarken, MD, MPH, announced today that an American robin collected on June 16^th in Selden has tested positive for West Nile virus, an illness that infects birds and is spread to humans by mosquitoes that feed on infected birds and then humans. This is the first bird to test positive for West Nile virus in the county this year. To date this year, the Department of Health Services has received no reports that humans, mosquitoes or horses have tested positive for West Nile virus.

Lake Ronkonkoma Beach in the Town of Islip is closed to bathing due to the finding of Cyanobacteria, more commonly known as blue-green algae.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has confirmed cyanobacteria blooms, more commonly known as blue–green algae, in Mill Pond in Southampton.  Due to this finding, health officials ask residents not to use or swim or wade in these waters and to keep their pets and children away from the area.
