Suffolk County Offers Support for Residents at Risk for Diabetes “Healthy Heart, Healthy Weight, Healthy Attitude”

The Suffolk County Department of Health Services, in collaboration with Cornell Cooperative Extension, is offering a program to residents who are overweight and struggling with high cholesterol and/or high blood pressure, all which contribute to risk for diabetes.

The Pesticide Advisory Committee was established through Local Law 34-1999, which was enacted for the purpose of phasing out the use of pesticides by the County for many pest control purposes.

Items on the Agenda include: discussion concerning methoprene and the committee’s annual report.

Lloyd Neck Estates Beach Closes to Bathing

The Suffolk County Department of Health Services has closed Lloyd  Neck Estates Beach in Lloyd Neck to bathing due to the finding of bacterial levels in excess of acceptable criteria.

Board of Review Hearings

The Board of Review hears requests for variances and waivers to the county’s requirements for water and sewage disposal for new construction, and for storage of toxic or hazardous materials, as stated in the Suffolk County Sanitary Code. A listing of each month’s scheduled hearings may be obtained in the days prior to the hearing by contacting the Department of Health Services’ Division of Environmental Quality at 852-5800.

More Mosquito Samples Test Positive for West Nile Virus

Commissioner James Tomarken announced today that 22 mosquito samples have tested positive for West Nile virus. The samples, all Culex pipiens-restuans, were collected between August 27th and 30th from locations in Huntington (1), Huntington Station (1), Greenlawn (1), East Northport (2), Dix Hills (1), Copiague (1), Lindenhurst (1), West Babylon (2), West Islip (1) Nesconset (3), Bay Shore (1) West Bay Shore (1) Bohemia (1), Selden (1), Holtville (1) East Setauket (1), Patchogue (1) and Jamesport (1). To date this year, 148 mosquito samples and four birds have tested positive for West Nile virus. No humans or horses have tested positive for West Nile virus in Suffolk County this year.
