Nutrition Programs

The nutrition programs are a key component of the Federal Older Americans Act that was passed in 1965.  Funding under the Older Americans Act helped to establish congregate and home delivered meal programs in Suffolk County over 40 years ago.  Since then, the program has expanded to over 30 programs.  Congregate programs provide seniors with a nutritious mid-day meal and an opportunity for socialization and recreation.  Additionally, there are often seminars and programs available that may be of interest to older residents.  For those in need of a home delivered meal, an assessment is done to determine eligibility for the program.

All meals meet 1/3 of the Daily Required Intake (DRI) and most programs provide one meal, Monday through Friday.  There is no fee to receive a meal; however, participants are encouraged to make a voluntary contribution towards the program to expand services.

The Shopping Assistance Program is designed to assist older adults who are unable to shop for groceries and essential items. Call to see if your Town participates.
