The Suffolk County Leaders in Training Internship Program

The Suffolk County Leaders in Training Program provides college students with real world experience in public service. An internship with Suffolk County provides a valuable opportunity to view the inner workings of County government as well as the ability to gain professional-level public sector experience.

To get started, review the posted opportunities below and fill out the online application.  You will have to upload a copy of your resume. Your application will be sent to one of the county's departmental internship supervisors that best suits your goals and interests. 

Qualifications/Area of study

The Suffolk County Leaders in Training Program is open to residents of both Suffolk and Nassau Counties. We encourage students of all areas of study to apply; our program has included students with a focus in Business Management, Media Relations, Finance, Sociology, Political Science, Biology, and more.

The county has various internship programs, and depending on the type, some are paid and some are unpaid opportunities.

Title of Internship Open Space & Farmland Preservation Intern

Occupational Interests Agriculture, land preservation, natural resources, real estate law, agriculture law, environmental science/studies, conservation, natural resources management

The Farmland and Open Space Unit within the Department of Economic Development & Planning is seeking an intern for Summer 2025. Interns in this position will assist the Unit with it's Farmland Development Rights and Open Space Preservation programs. We're seeking an individual interested in learning about and working on projects related to land preservation, real estate and land use.
